Summary of Position

The Community Music Center of Boston is seeking a Choir Director to lead Una Voce, a non-audition casual, energetic, and social adult choir. Their primary responsibilities include leading weekly evening rehearsals with a collaborative pianist and selecting repertoire for the choir that includes the following genres: international folk music, Spirituals, arrangements of pop/rock songs and musical theater, and more. The Choir Director will also support members in exercises that increase vocal health and singing stamina and foster a supportive and uplifting community environment for members of all experience levels.

Status: Part-time hourly, exempt

Start Date: April 2023

Schedule: In person on Tuesdays 6:30-8:00 pm, some weekends required for concerts

Specific Responsibilities:

Choir Instruction

  • Conduct weekly rehearsals with a staff collaborative pianist, including setting up and breaking down
  • Engage students through teaching fundamentals, supporting a growing love and appreciation of music, and instructing specific technical skills
  • Develop and implement courses of study that incorporates basic music skills & music reading
  • Foster and support a culture of a community choir
  • Select accessible and diverse repertoire that is positive and appropriate for a multigenerational adult chorus of various ages and experience levels
  • Prepare the choir to perform a minimum of two (2) times per school year
  • Accurately update and maintain digital attendance sheets in a timely manner
  • Maintaining open and regular communication with parents/guardians (as applicable), students, and faculty colleagues (especially collaborative pianist) via email to support educational progress

Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor's Degree in Music (voice, choral conducting preferred) or equivalent professional experience with community choirs, voice/vocal training, and basic keyboard skills
  • Must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S as CMCB is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time
  • Must be able to comply with company-wide COVID-19 vaccination verification or regular testing requirement
  • Demonstrated skills in conducting and leading an ensemble
  • Fluent score-reading in treble and bass clefs, knowledge of music theory including but not limited to meters and key signatures, pronunciation of different languages in programmed music
  • Knowledgeable of a variety of styles of choral music
  • Experience working with diverse populations of students
  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as pedagogical and professional values

  • Working knowledge of Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Forms, and Google Sheets) and Zoom

Preferred

  • Fluency in Spanish, French Creole, and/or Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) is highly desirable

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee needs to frequently move and walk around the rehearsal space. They must be able to remain in a stationary position 25-50% of the time while operating a conducting instrument. They must also converse with students in a normal classroom setting and discern and recognize changes in tone, pitch, rhythm, and volume.

Compensation and Benefits

$45-50 per hour for group teaching, commensurate with experience
