Assistant Mechanic
Department: Department of Transportation – Fleet Management
Hourly Range: $20.05 - $22.43
Closing Date: 5/17/2023

Job Summary: The principal function of this position is to assist in the repair, set up, dismantle and upkeep of all Milwaukee County owned vehicles and equipment.

Job Duties:
  • Perform all tire mounting and balancing for vehicles and mowing equipment
  • Perform light to intermediate repairs and service the following on vehicles and equipment which includes component replacement, exhaust work, light replacement, basic tune-ups, battery replacement, alternators, starters, thermostats, and serpentine belt replacement.
  • Perform routine fluid changes, filter changes and vehicle inspections
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Current Wisconsin Resident
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License Class D at time of application and maintained during incumbency.
  • 2 years of practical work experience in servicing or repairing automotive vehicles, equipment and/or construction equipment required.
  • Possession of hand tools of the trade required.
  • Basic knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel preferred
  • Able to push/pull up to 25lbs and lift/carry up to 75lbs on a daily basis.
  • Basic experience with diagnostic software and fleet work order system familiarity.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of standard practices and methods of automotive maintenance and equipment repair (gasoline and/or diesel); skill in the maintenance and/or repair of automotive vehicles and other gasoline and/or diesel equipment; Exchange of basic information with internal and/or external contacts. Read, write and comprehend simple instructions, reports, short correspondence and memos. Read, analyze, and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals, scientific/technical journals and procedures, government regulations, financial and legal documents.
