The Position

Associate Corrosion Control Specialists work in the Pipeline Infrastructure Division, part of the East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) Engineering and Construction Department. They perform complex engineering studies; plan, coordinate and lead projects; and provide expertise and support to EBMUD work groups in implementing corrosion control methods for large diameter raw water and treated water transmission pipelines, small diameter distribution pipelines, and related facilities.

Duties include:

  • Researching and reviewing industry literature, collecting, and analyzing cathodic protection data, preparing, and presenting reports and recommendations for implementing corrosion mitigation measures to protect pipeline and related infrastructure.
  • Providing project management for corrosion control projects that include the development of the project scope, contract documents, schedule, and budget.
  • Directing assigned staff and consultants; preparing analyses and work products developed by project team members; coordinating communications with other work groups, client contacts and other agency representatives; monitoring budget and project schedule; and adjusting priorities, resources, work process, and task sequencing.
  • Providing consultation to and assisting other work groups in the research and evaluation of alternatives, environmental impact assessment, and characteristics of coating systems, coating materials, and specifications for corrosion control mechanisms to be used in EBMUD facilities.
  • Performing corrosion control design reviews for reservoir, pumping plant, and other major infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Designing, testing, and performing startup and adjustments for specialized cathodic protection systems for a wide variety of infrastructure and facilities; and designing complex recoating and deleading projects.
  • Acting as the EBMUD representative to other agencies regarding the operation, permitting, destruction, and/or removal of cathodic protection anode wells and other corrosion control systems; and ensuring that projects and final documents address EBMUD’s regulatory and other requirements.

A flexible/hybrid work from home schedule may be available for some positions in this job classification.

The salary range is $11,362 per month increasing to $11,930, $12,527, $13,153, and $13,811 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

Requirements

1. A bachelor’s degree in material science, metallurgy, or an ABET-accredited engineering curriculum, or a California Engineer-in-Training certificate.

2. A minimum of two years of corrosion control or civil engineering experience at the level of the EBMUD positions of Assistant Engineer or Assistant Corrosion Control Specialist or higher.

3. Possession of a valid CA driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.

4. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the position and be willing to work overtime as needed.

The Selection Process

1. Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 24, 2023. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.

2. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates receiving a passing score to be invited to a panel interview tentatively scheduled for April 2023.

4. Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.

5. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status, the probation period is 6 months.

6. All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
