Job Overview
Assists the Track Superintendent to assure the dirt and Tapeda tracks are maintained and in optimum condition to provide the safest and fairest conditions possible for thoroughbred horse racing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists with managing and coaching maintenance personnel in their various duties and assignments.
- Actively participates in the manual labor, equipment operation, and other hands-on duties necessary for track maintenance.
- Helps the Track Superintendent to ensure that all dirt and Tapeda racing surfaces are safe and fair for horse racing activities.
- Works with the Track Superintendent, the Dir of Fleet/Equipment Ops and the purchasing department to procure proper materials for the track surface and actively supervises the application of those materials.
- Grades, or oversees grading of the track on a regular basis to ensure optimum performance.
- Collaborates with Gulfstream management on a daily basis for communication about racing surface, weather and equipment situation.
- Assists with projects such as revitalization of the track surface, major repairs, and big event preparation.
- May assist with interviews, new hires, and training of maintenance personnel.
- Schedules employees, distributes and plans work assignments.
- Reviews time edit sheets to ensure correct payroll records.
- Under the guidance of the Track Superintendent, evaluates employee performance and recommends appropriate action.
- Maintains the highest levels of employee efficiency and quality standards within the department; works to keep overtime to a minimum.
- Cooperates with the Director of Fleet Ops regarding preventative maintenance for track equipment, and replacement opportunities.
- Works with equipment operators and mechanics to assure the cleanliness, safety, and sanitation of all track racing equipment in line with company, local, state, and federal procedures.
- Assists with keeping appropriate records of track operations, especially those required by State and other official mandates; Share the location and organization of the documents with higher or lower person in chain of command.
- Ensures all occupational health and safety requirements are met and adhered to.
- Participates in safety training and accident investigation including completion of all necessary and required forms.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in operation of track maintenance functions.
- Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of track conditions and dirt racing surfaces
- Knowledge of Tapeda surfaces preferred, but not required.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred; ability to give directions effectively to people of diverse languages and backgrounds (with interpreter if necessary).
- Experience operating tractors, track harrows, commercial mowers, and associated racetrack equipment.
- Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent communication, supervisory and organizational skills.
- Be good at problem solving and multi-tasking.
- Ability and willingness to work very early and/or very late hours, work on weekends and on holidays.

The employee is frequently required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is outdoors, in sun, heat, cold, wind and all types of weather conditions for the entire work day. Employee is regularly exposed to risks associated with working on uneven, unpaved surfaces, and around various types of equipment. The employee is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles, including dirt, foliage debris, second-hand environmental fumes or smoke. The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to occasionally loud.
