Shift/Hours/Location: M-F, 8am-5pm, Onsite, Milwaukie, Oregon
WHAT YOU WILL BE WORKING ON
- Work as a part of the R&D team with an open mind to new ideas in a fast-paced environment.
- Participate as an individual contributor and as a team member.
- Support MLI's product management team to ensure robust battery products are released by preparing battery elements.
- Maintain and improve the battery preparation equipment and develop strategies to benchmark new products, i.e., formulation of electrodes, advanced liquid electrolyte and polymers based solid electrolyte.
- Assemble, use, and maintain standard laboratory equipment including Schlenk lines, vacuum pumps, inert atmosphere chambers, rotary evaporators, distillation systems, recirculating chillers/heaters, and pressure vessels.
- Develop and execute the design of experiments to access the performance and lifetime of lithium-ion batteries with MLI products.
- Perform various battery fabrication techniques, ranging from lab-scale manufacturing of electrodes and electrolytes to the electrochemical cells (coin/pouch cells and others).
- Verbal and digital communication of data and results on a daily and weekly basis.
- Efficient time management skills and safety awareness.
- Actively supporting and promoting MLI safety culture.
- Maintain 5S: clean, safe, and organized working environments.
- Performs other related duties as directed as this list is not all inclusive.
QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD or M.S. degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with a focus on battery.
- 3+ years of experience in industry or development labs working with battery chemicals.
- Excellent foundation in organic electrochemistry, polymer structure-property relationship, polymer composite design and processing as well as solvent interaction on a variety of polymer classes.
- Extensive experience in Li-ion battery development, including preparation of components, i.e., making a slurry, coating, calendaring, and drying as well as liquid and polymers based solid electrolyte.
- Extensive Hands-on experience in battery assembly.
- Knowledge of maintaining and experience working with Schlenk lines and glovebox.
- Excellent listening, oral, and written communication/presentation skills.
- Ability to work with autonomy and be proactive, as well as strong self-discipline.
- Must submit to a background check.
- Must be authorized to work in the USA.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Duties are generally performed indoors in an office and high purity manufacturing environment. The noise level in the manufacturing work environment is occasionally loud. Employees will work in a covered Process Safety Management (PSM) environment containing threshold quantities of flammable liquids and/or gasses that have a potential for fire or explosion. Employees working in this environment are required to be free from devices that are not considered intrinsically safe.
