Job description
Under immediate supervision, performs copy cataloging of new books in accordance with general policies and San Antonio Public Library practices. Working conditions are primarily inside office environment. Corrects and updates library catalog. Exercises no supervision.

7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday
- Catalogs new materials in assigned area(s) according to national cataloging standards and local policies and procedures.
- Searches bibliographic utility database, exports records into the Library's Integrated Library System, and sets holdings.
- Reviews bibliographic records for accuracy and updates or adds data as needed.
- Creates and edits copy-specific information in the library catalog.
- Corrects errors in the library catalog, including typographical errors, errors in MARC coding, incorrect call numbers, and series statements.
- Processes new library materials, which involves occasionally lifting and carrying materials weighing 25 pounds.
- Performs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagging of new books.
- Acts as liaison with staff with Holdings Editors role at other Library locations, including training, informing of database corrections, and responding to inquiries.
- Prepares and processes withdrawn library materials for transfer to Friends of the Library.
- Maintains monthly statistics.
- Two (2) years of college from an accredited college or university.
- Two (2) years of library experience in cataloging.

- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
- Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
- Knowledge of a body of standardized library rules, procedures, and operations.
- Knowledge of Library Department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of automated systems used in libraries such as Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), as well as the Internet and online catalogs.
- Knowledge of basic office software such as word processing, email, and spreadsheets.
- Skill in using a personal computer, related applications, and the use of electronic resources as used in libraries.
- Ability to learn and apply the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
- Ability to understand and work with MARC bibliographic records.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion.
- Ability to perform precise determinations regarding cataloging classifications.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
