Certified Professional Coder CPC Job Description

Summary/Objective: Responsible for identifying and correctly coding all diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10 and CPT codes in accordance with state and federal requirements on all physician office, physician hospital, and mid-level provider visits. Advises and coordinates with physicians and staff on coding documentation. This position requires multi-tasking effortlessly, prioritizing efficiently, handling patient requests, placing outbound calls to patients, and handling all administrative tasks with a positive attitude.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1. Adheres to and supports the mission, purpose, philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the practice.

Adheres to the HIPAA Compliance Plan and the Privacy Standards Confidentiality Agreement.

Review documentation to ensure it supports diagnosis and procedure coding.

Enters charges and documents all activity in accordance with company documentation standards.

Prepares and submits electronic claims to various insurance payors.

Reviews provider medical records to identify opportunities for improvement in coding and documentation.

Adheres to regulations prohibiting unbundling and other questionable practices.

Assists with coding questions and/or researches for guidelines.

Assists with answering telephone inquiries regarding billing and coding and provides information as requested.

Follows up on aged account receivables through final resolution.

Other duties as assigned based on billing, payment posting, and demographic entry, to ensure company goals are met and a team environment is maintained.

Participate in coding, documentation, Quality and Risk Adjustment educational activities.

Provides support for the business office assisting with phone calls, check in, check out, etc.

Demonstrates ability to review medical records and abstract coding information.

Able to work effectively with providers, leadership, and co-workers.

Performs other tasks as assigned.

License:

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through AAPC.

Non-Clinical Functions:

Additional Duties:

1. Working knowledge of commercial payors, and Medicare coding regulations.

Awareness of and compliance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and related healthcare privacy regulations.

Minimum of 2 years coding experience, medical billing, charge posting, insurance verification, and filing claims for physician services.

Demonstrates ability to examine medical record documents for completeness and accuracy.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent multi-tasking and time management skills.

Demonstrates a high level of organizational skills.

Able to exercise a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision-making to achieve organizational objectives.

Able to work well independently and be detailed-oriented, but also interact well with a team.

Able to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Demonstrates proficiency in relevant computer hardware and software, as well as EMR systems, and other standard medical office equipment.

Must be able to work in a fast paced environment
