Summary/Objective
The hospice aide is a member of the interdisciplinary group who works under the supervision of a registered nurse and performs various services for a patient as necessary to meet the patient's personal needs and to promote comfort. The hospice aide is responsible for observing the patient, reporting these observations, and documenting care performed.
Essential Functions

- Performs personal care needs and attends to patient’s requests promptly after receiving an assignment. If unable to perform a certain task report to the Case Manager immediately.
- Provides patient and family with positive communication techniques, within realm of ethical and respectful care, including confidentiality.
- Meets safety needs of patient and using equipment safely and properly (foot stools, side rails, O2 etc.)
- Gives personal care including baths, back rubs, oral hygiene, shampoos and changing bed linen as often as assigned.
- Assists in dressing and undressing patients as assigned.
- Plans and prepares nutritious meals, including shopping, as assigned.
- Assists in feeding the patient as assigned.
- Takes and records oral, rectal, and auxiliary temperatures, pulse, respiration and blood pressure when ordered with appropriate completed/demonstrated skills competency.
- Provides proper care and observation of patient's skin to prevent breakdown of tissue over bony prominence.
- Assesses and reports on patient's condition and significant changes to the Case Manager. Also aware of the caregiver or other individuals living with the patient and interpersonal issues.
- Assists in ambulation and exercise as instructed by the hospice nurse or therapist. Provides normal range of motion and transfers/positioning as directed.
- Assists with self-administered medications as allowed by state regulations, such as “reminders.”
- Offers and assists with bedpans and urinals. Provides assistance as assigned with light laundry needs.
- Maintains the comfort, privacy and dignity of patients and interacts with them in a manner that displays warmth, respect and promotes a caring environment.
- Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with patients, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
- Attend and participate in departmental meetings and in-services as directed.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
May be exposed to extremes of heat and cold in all weather conditions. Must drive in various weather conditions. This role may be exposed to infections and come into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses and under wide variety of circumstances. May be subject to varying and unpredictable situations. May handle emergency or crisis situations.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping on a regular basis. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects and patients weighing over 75 pounds (ability to adequately lift, support, and bodily manipulate the weight of a patient). Fine hand coordination, ability to read and write, the ability to understand and follow written, oral instructions and directions. Ability to remain calm under pressure.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
Travel
Travel is expected for this position.
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be a Certified Aide (C.N.A.) in good standing with the State. Must maintain a current certification in the state throughout employment.
- Must achieve 12 hours of in-service education annually as required by federal regulations (as well as meet State requirements, if exceeds federal).
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Current (maintain) CPR certification.
- Licensed driver with automobile that is insured in accordance with state/company requirements and is in good working order.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- Computer skills to perform job duties.
- Ability to read and follow written instructions and document care given.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Understanding of hospice philosophy and comfortable in providing specialized care to the terminally ill and issues with death/dying.
- Self- directed with the ability to work with little direct supervision. Able to provide a clam manner when in a patient’s
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality regarding patient and company propriety information.
- Must have the ability to relate professionally and positively and work cooperatively with patients, families, and employees at all levels.
