We are seeking an experienced estimator to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for accurately estimating the costs of civil construction projects and producing competitive bids to secure contracts.
As this will be a new area of the business, the candidate will need to help build and expand this side of the business. They will work closely with senior management and project managers to develop the company's bidding strategies and establish its reputation in the civil construction market. The successful candidate will be expected to be proactive, innovative, and self-motivated to identify new business opportunities and provide insight into developing new construction methodologies.
Responsibilities:
- Review construction project plans, specifications, and requirements to accurately estimate the cost of materials, labor, and equipment. Attend pre-bid meetings to ensure the scope of work and risks are understood.
- Develop and submit competitive and accurate cost estimates and bids to potential clients.
- Must be able to perform takeoffs
- Identify strategic opportunities to increase production efficiencies and negotiate material quotes with vendors/subs to increase margins/competitiveness for projects bid.
- Develop and maintain resource information related to products, vendors, subcontractors, government requirements, etc.
- Conform estimates by incorporating a build plan and project estimate.
- Work with the Finance Department to analyze all completed project budgets to actual materials, labor, and equipment results, identify areas where cost savings could have occurred, and then set procedures to carry those improvements forward.
- Analyze bids (both won and lost bids) to maximize company performance and improve future projects.
- Assist and share your knowledge with the team.
- Interface with owners, A/E’s, and other contractors to provide timely engineering and cost data regarding project budgets and feasibility.
- Provide engineering and estimating support on awarded contracts as assigned – this may include estimating extra work items, change orders, credits, procuring material, etc.
- Preparation of Prequalification(s) and various Bid Packages.
- Work closely with project managers and other team members to ensure that project budgets are met, and that project timelines are achievable.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and be able to prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of estimates and project costs.
- Assist in developing the company's bidding strategies and civil construction capabilities.
- Identify new business opportunities and provide insight into the development of new construction methodologies.
- Assist in establishing the company's reputation in the civil construction market.
Requirements:
- A bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience as an estimator in civil construction.
- Knowledgeable with conversion factors and unit weights of all related construction materials (various aggregates, soils, concrete, asphalt, rip rap, rebar, pipe, etc.) commonly utilized in the industry.
- Knowledge of preparing/pricing water control, diversion, and dewatering plans.
- Computer estimating skills are necessary, including Bid2Win Software (comparable to HCSS Heavy Bid), Bluebeam, and AGTEK.
- Additional computer Proficiency: Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, and MS Projects.
- Knowledge of estimating techniques and cost control, plus the ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems, is essential.
- All candidates should know of private, City, County, Denver Water, MHFD, SEMSWA, CDOT, State Parks, USFS, Army Corp of Engineers, Division of Dams, and Airport specifications, with a proven track record of bringing in contracts on time and within budget.
- A proven track record of producing accurate cost estimates and successful project bids.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office and construction estimating software.
- Self-motivated and innovative with a willingness to learn and adapt.
- Ability to work in a team and a fast-paced environment.
