Job description
- Performs intermediate technical work enforcing building, zoning, minimum housing, commercial maintenance and various environmental codes, ordinances and regulations; conducting field inspections; maintaining case documentation and records; preparing reports; and related work as required.
- Enforces the Unified Development Ordinance, various environmental codes, ordinances and regulations; provides technical assistance to certain boards and commissions and public; conducts field inspections; maintains case documents and records; prepares reports.
- Enforces minimum housing and nuisance abatement codes and ordinances.
- Receives and investigates citizen complaints regarding code and ordinance violations; interprets and explains code requirements.
- Composes correspondence; prepares forms; prepares and maintains various spreadsheets; sets up and maintains files and records.
- Answers questions from private citizens, contractors and builders regarding city ordinances and state regulations.
- Assists other departments as needed; performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications
General knowledge of the City’s ordinances, policies and procedures; general knowledge of legal procedures related to the enforcement of ordinances and codes; ability to read and interpret blueprints, site plans and designs to ensure compliance with appropriate ordinances and codes; general knowledge in preparing various documents and reports and maintaining files and records; general knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software; general knowledge in the use of software associated with the position (e.g. EnerGov); ability to make arithmetic computations; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to enforce ordinances and regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, elected officials, engineers, architects, contractors and the general public.Any combination of education & experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major coursework in business & public administration, or related field, and moderate experience in code enforcement. Possession of a valid NC driver's license; must meet & maintain all certifications, license & training requirements for the position.
