Job Summary/Purpose:
The Community Assistant (CA) is live-in required, student staff position with Housing and Residence Life. Responsible for assisting in the implementation of a residential experience/community development model.

Terms of Employment:
  • This is a part-time (<.50 FTE) Temporary Hourly/Non-Benefited position
  • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed.
  • COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
  • The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
  • Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:
  • Serve as a role model and maintain appropriate peer-leader relationships with an assigned area of resident students.
  • Facilitate community development among roommates, suite mates, and floor members through effective availability, accessibility, interaction, outreach, and programming.
  • Engage in intentional conversations with resident students, identify any social and academic needs, and respond to them in a variety of means such as activities, programs, and individual/group interactions.
  • Respond to, document, and report inappropriate or concerning behavior from resident students, staff, and guests according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Respond to, document and report emergencies according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Serve as a resource and act as a referral agent for resident students, parents, prospective students, and guests.
  • Maintains visibility and connection with residents by regularly coordinating and attending programs, vising with residents in the community, maintaining presence in the campus dining facility, and by being available to address resident questions/concerns. Any work or activity which will take the employee away from the residence hall for extended periods of time must be approved by the supervisor.
  • Assist with and complete housing operations administrative tasks, as assigned, both by fulfilling duties efficiently and by helping explain procedures to resident students.
  • Work closely with custodial and maintenance personnel to help accomplish their goals as efficiently as possible.
  • Attend and actively participate in all scheduled time commitments.
  • Perform other duties as they pertain to the overall objective of the position, as assigned.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:
Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed.
Often work is performed at night and after regular working hours. Computer screens are used 25 percent of the time. Community Assistants must be able to do rounds through the building, walking the hallways and stairwells, and respond late at night while on duty. Extended standing with occasional lifting between 10-25 lbs. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least one academic quarter of previous residential/communal living experience or the equivalent (i.e. residence hall, military barracks, etc.)
  • Successful completion of at least 12 credits at an accredited community college or university.
  • At the time of application, possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50, and must maintain a GPA of 2.50 throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in COCC student housing is a plus.
  • At the time of application, have a maintained (each term) minimum GPA of 2.50
