Job Description
Under the general supervision of the WIC (Women, Infants & Children) Director, this position is responsible for providing medical nutrition therapy to metabolically high-risk clients, consulting with area physicians concerning individual treatment plans of high-risk clients, determining the appropriate formula or combination of formulas to meet the nutritional requirements of high-risk clients and arranging for the purchase and/or delivery of such formulas. Other duties include providing follow-up consultations with high risk clients, conducting nutritional in-services for staff, developing nutritional teaching materials.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Determines eligibility of applicant for WIC benefits based on assessment of nutritional and/or medical risk factors according to federal, state, and local policies.
  • Determines eligibility of applicant for WIC benefits based on income and residency according to federal, state and local policies as needed.
  • Obtains and assesses diet recalls for nutritional deficiencies according to nutritional standards and state policies.
  • Obtains height and weight measurements of all high-risk applicants, following state and local policies and procedures.
  • Accurately plots height and weight measurements on appropriate growth charts and/or weight gain grids according to state and local policy and procedures and performs complex mathematical calculations in completion of this function.
  • Performs hematocrit/hemoglobin test on all high-risk applicants according to state and local policies and procedures.
  • Provides individualized counseling based on conditions of risk and anthropometric values.
  • Consults with physicians concerning the nutritional care of metabolically high-risk clients and provides recommendations for appropriate medical nutrition therapy.
? Writes diet prescriptions for food packages according to individual needs assessed at certification or as the need arises, in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Makes referrals to appropriate medical/social agencies for high-risk clients.
  • Issues food benefits to WIC participants as needed according to federal, state local policies.
  • Approves formula prescriptions requiring RD approval according to state guidelines and policies.
  • Develops nutritional in-services for staff.
  • Complete breast feeding educator curriculum and counsel according to state and local policies.
  • Develops nutritional teaching materials for individual and group instruction.
  • Teaches nutrition education group classes, to include facilitated learning style class and cooking and food demonstration classes.
  • Complies with safe food handling guidelines from the federal, state and local entities.
  • Performs the duties of the Nutritionist IV, III or II when necessary.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or – multi-line telephone systems.
  • Ability to operate measuring and weighing equipment.
  • Ability to operate blood testing equipment.


Licenses/Certification

Required Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics or related field and a minimum of one year of clinical or community dietetics experience strongly preferred. Registered Dietitian with the American Commission of Dietetic Registration required. Valid Texas Driver’s License required. Reliable personal vehicle with current insurance required.
