About the Organization:

Meals on Wheels provides home-delivered, nutritionally balanced meals that are delivered to seniors in Kent and Allegan counties. These meals are prepared locally in our central kitchen. In addition to a nutritious meal, our drivers are delivering a much-needed safety check and a smiling face. In 2018, we served 2,969 homebound seniors 572,003 meals.

Senior Pantry services are provided to low income Kent County residents. Seniors can shop up to twice per month and may select from a wide variety of foods that are available from all food groups. Each month, seniors can save up to $100-$120 on groceries, freeing up needed dollars for medication and heating. Each year our pantries distribute over a million pounds of food! In 2018, we served 2,082 seniors and had 22,235 visits.

Senior Dining Sites provide meals at 19 locations throughout Kent and Allegan counties. Older adults are provided with a nutritious lunch in a group setting. The focus for this program is on providing social engagement, which may include exercise, games, or simply companionship, in addition to a meal. In 2018, we served 105,810 meals to 1,774 seniors.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Develop an improvement plan to create a seamless and efficient process that will allow for easy hosting of large groups of community volunteers to build hundreds of emergency meals.
  • Observe the current process in place for volunteer groups building emergency
  • meals. Brainstorm ways to make the preparation process easier and the project more enjoyable for volunteer groups.
  • Create a system to coordinate all of the emergency meals preparation process steps and communication to use prior to each volunteer groups’ arrival.
  • Build and engage with internal and external partners, including other VISTA service members, to recruit business participation in the program with program staff.
  • Create an Advisory Committee of volunteers to keep communication open with volunteers and to allow their input and involvement in programming, events and training.
  • Expand ongoing recruitment in community of Grand Rapids
  • Create new corporate partnerships to engage in volunteering with MOWWM.

Qualifications:

  • Communicate effectively both oral and written; research, develop, present, and promote program to community, potential donors, and potential partners.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently support planning, development, and establishment of new programs.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Need to meet deadlines, follow instructions and accept direction on given assignments.
  • Ability to work well within a team environment.

Benefits:

  • Living Stipend: VISTAs receive a bi-weekly living stipend of about $675.20, for a total stipend of $16,204.80 paid over one-year.
  • Personal and Sick Leave: VISTAs earn up to 10 days of personal leave and up to 10 days of sick leave during their yearlong term.
  • Education Award: Upon successful completion of the entire term, members earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of about $6,000 that can be used towards eligible post-secondary education expenses, or a cash stipend of about $1,800.
  • Student Loan Relief: VISTAs may be eligible for student loan relief programs during their term of service based on their individual circumstances. This may include deferment, forbearance, loan forgiveness, and/or interest payments.
  • Non-Competitive Eligibility: AmeriCorps VISTA members earn federal non-competitive eligibility, giving members an edge in the federal hiring process.
