Job description
- As a general recruitment depending on current needs, the Connecticut Careers Trainee will be assigned to the Laboratory Support Services section of the laboratory but may be cross trained within any one of the following sections: Forensic Biology/DNA, Chemical Analysis, or Identification.
- In this role, you will conduct full-process examinations while working alongside other lab professionals, forensic science examiners and will collaborate with law enforcement partners, as needed. More details can be found in the class specification.
- We are seeking individuals with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (Forensic Science, Crime Scene Investigation or closely related field) for the 2-year training program, or a master’s degree for the 1-year training program. Upon successful completions of the training, incumbents will be eligible for promotion to Forensic Science Examiner 1.
- This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, scheduled Monday to Friday, with the potential for part-time telework.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional position.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The Connecticut Careers Trainee will receive training in various forensic functions depending on the section where they are placed. Training may include the following: examination of submitted evidence and completion of written descriptions; photographing of evidence; removal of trace materials from evidence for analysis in areas of criminalistics and identification; conducting complex criminalistic forensic analysis of evidence utilizing conventional wet chemistry methodologies and/or technical instrumentation relating to gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy; polarized light microscopy, alternate light sources, photographic equipment and computer technology; assisting in reconstruction of crime scenes; conducting forensic identification in areas of documents, firearms and latent fingerprints; maintaining of instrumentation and equipment and safeguarding laboratory physical evidence; participation in research programs; handling materials and samples before and after analysis in order to maintain them for safekeeping; assisting administration with procurement requests; preparing comprehensive reports; performing evidence receiving duties; providing explanations and interpretations of results; handling discoveries and FOI requests; testifying in court as an expert witness; may assist in training laboratory staff and law enforcement personnel; performing related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Crime Scene Investigation, or closely related field.
- Received college credit for completion of coursework in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Statistics or Population Genetics
- Experience processing samples on a rapid DNA system
- Experience in the pre-processing and handling of Convicted Offender buccal samples.
- Experience with aseptic handling of forensic evidence.
