Controls Engineer

Position Summary:
Responsible for designing and implementing PLC-based machine control systems for Automated and Semi-Automated production equipment. Design work includes PLC programming, Electrical cabinet design, specification, and sourcing of electrical and electro-mechanical hardware. Build electrical cabinets and panels for projects when required. Also responsible for programming and integration of robots for assembly and machining operations. Support existing PLC and robot-based equipment to maintain factory throughput.
- Communicate with mechanical engineers to generate concepts, detailed sequence of operations, and specify special electro-mechanical hardware to meet project requirements.
- Manage multiple projects to synchronize with mechanical hardware delivery to meet final project deadlines. Document project progress with an established project tracker for communication to team members and management.
- Provide detailed documentation for PLC and robotic programs, I/O lists, bill of materials, and electrical schematics. Maintain documentation if modifications are required.
- Wire and build complete electrical panels, cabinets, and HMI displays. Wire completed machinery.
- Thoroughly debug control systems with the mechanical engineer to meet SIG SAUER machine spec runoff requirements, NFPA 79 electrical, and OSHA safety standards.
- Quickly respond to troubleshoot existing production equipment to maintain output. This includes specialized assembly and test equipment, automated CNC equipment, and robotic systems.
- Communicate with all levels of production management and engineering regarding project status and troubleshooting duties.
- Work with Manufacturing Engineers to generate detailed machine specifications for turnkey, automated systems.
- Research new technology for machine control systems and automation to reduce manufacturing costs and improve throughput.
- Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of experience, Associate’s degree or equivalent with 5+ years of experience, or a High school diploma with 10+ years of experience.
- Proficiency with multiple PLC software packages including but not limited to Allen-Bradley and Mitsubishi.
- In-depth knowledge of servo-driven systems, load cells, sensors, and HMI displays.
- In-depth knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics.
- In-depth knowledge of NFPA 79 electrical and OSHA safety standards. (Preferred)
- In-depth knowledge of programming robotic systems. (Preferred)
- Basic CAD skills for documentation of electrical schematics and panel layout.
- Project management skills.
- Able to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which is required in designated areas.
