Supervises one of three grounds crews comprised of approximately six Groundskeepers. The crew leader is a working supervisor primarily responsible for scheduling, supervising, and coordinating campus-wide grounds and general labor support. Specifically, this position is tasked with overseeing the mowing all campus grounds; excluding athletic venues, coordinating major outdoor event set ups (commencement, concerts, reunion, etc.). Supervises and trains assigned staff in the proper performance of their duties. Coordinates work with other Crew Leaders, the Operations Area Managers, other Facilities supervisors, and others on campus to meet the customers' needs. Monitors and inspects work to ensure conformance to standards. This position reports to Grounds Manager.

Job Duties:
  • Responsible for supporting campus-wide grounds and labor requirements, with a focus on grass cutting, event setups, furniture and equipment relocation, snow removal, recycling, and assisting with bulk supply ordering, tool inventory, work order processing, and special programs as designated by the Grounds Manager,
  • Determines work and resource requirements and develops recurring and seasonal work schedules. Prioritizes and assigns work so as to ensure that work assignments are equitable. Communicates and coordinates schedules with others.
  • Supervises and provides direction to staff including, but not limited to, assigning work, providing technical direction, preparing and delivering annual performance reviews, performance standards and University and department policies, procedures and regulations
    Conducts periodic check of storage areas, supplies and equipment.
  • Reports all problems, damages, stolen or missing items, and coordinates repair or replacement.
  • Under the guidance of Grounds Manager compiles bill of materials for new work and repairs, and orders needed materials and supplies for ongoing work, as well as to maintain working levels for routine repairs,
  • Sets and demonstrates performance standards. Inspects work area to ensure performance standards are met. Reviews, analyzes and changes procedures when appropriate.
  • Recommends appropriate work methods, tool and equipment use, rule changes, working conditions,
  • Assesses training needs and conducts required training to assure individual and team proficiency. Conducts recurring training for safety, maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDS), ensures that work is performed safely and that equipment is properly maintained and operated in accordance with appropriate safety procedures. Recommends training topics and assists others in conducting training.
  • Responsible for appearance, cleanliness and improvement of the University campus, including checking for safety and fire violations and reporting all personnel accidents.
  • Communicates effectively, and interacts with students, visitors, contractors, vendors, and other University staffs.
  • Works independently on assigned projects with minimal supervision. Supervises a crew of Groundskeepers.
  • Adheres to OSHA standards, employs safe practices, and follows safety policies/procedures. Uses PPE in a safe manner, sets examples for others, notifies supervisor of potential hazards, and demonstrates good housekeeping habits.
  • Supports and promotes the University's sustainability efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



    Minimum Qualifications:
    A high school diploma or equivalent.
    At least three years working as a ground's laborer, with experience operating related equipment,
    Demonstrated knowledge of grounds maintenance functions.
    Demonstrated ability to supervise and provide leadership and guidance to a crew
    Familiarity and experience with the tools and equipment used in the performance of this position. A proven record of following safe practices, and an understanding of maintenance procedures and the ability to evaluate equipment.
    Experience operating a variety of manual/motor powered tools, and grounds equipment, and the demonstrated ability to train staff on the proper use of such items. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written instructions, and to perform basic math calculations.
    Proven ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    Valid driver's license and a safe driving record for the past three years.
    Basic computer skills

    Other Requirements:
    A post offer criminal background and driving record check, and drug screening will be conducted.
    This position is classified as part of essential services. Individual is required to report to work even if campus has a delayed opening, early closing, or is closed, unless instructed otherwise by a supervisor or when the individual has concerns related to their personal safety.
    Must work overtime when emergencies exist, or when special programs require it.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Supervisory experience is highly desired.
    CDL license

    Physical Demands:
    Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 75 pounds unassisted.
    Daily exposure to dust, dirt, weather and temperature changes.
    Position works primarily outdoors but occasionally indoors.
    Must be able walk around campus, climb stairs, ladders, walkways, and elevated areas.
    Must use proper safety equipment for hearing, head, eye, feet, hand, and body protection.

    Work Type:
    This is a full-time, year round, benefits eligible position.

    This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.

    Salary Range:
    This is a Staff Non-exempt position with a hiring range of $22.22-27.78 (NE12). The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
