Data Science Specialist
Job description
The Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR) is looking for an energetic and innovative data scientist to work hand in hand with biotechnology researchers to create data models, analytical methods and processes. This position will assist in scientific computing and data analysis needs of IBBR researchers and their collaborators by lending expertise in statistics, data modeling, machine learning, and neural networks. While a background in the sciences is useful, it is not required. We need someone who can support our researchers with new tools and techniques and a love of statistics, analysis, and data science techniques.
The data science specialist will work inside the Information Technology and Research Computing component of the IBBR Commons reporting to the director of Information Technology and Research Computing. This position serves as a technical resource to support researchers in the use of machine learning/AI techniques in their research by helping them learn the ins and outs of software tools such as Tensorflow or pyTorch. As a resource to bioscience researchers, this position will support university and federal scientists across a variety of projects, including collaborations with partners in the pharmaceutical industry.
IBBR is a joint research enterprise of the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. IBBR leverages state-of-art integrative methods for bioanalytical, biophysical and structural characterization of biomolecules: cryo-electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray crystallography, small angle neutron and x-ray scattering and mass spectrometry. IBBR researchers seek to advance state-of-the-art measurement technologies that support biotherapeutic development and biomanufacturing, accelerating delivery of safe and effective medicines to the public. IBBR is a major initiative, and supported in part, by the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State (MPower), an initiative designed to achieve innovation and impact through collaboration.
