PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Manage the design activities of design subcontractors and/or teaming partners on a design/build project with respect to quality, schedule, constructability and cost. Provide control and supervision over the cost of design services and interface with the project management team to ensure that project design objectives are met.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Establish parameters for success of the engineering and design component of a design/build project. Interface with project and proposal management team to identify key performance criteria.
- Work with the design team to develop a plan during the proposal process to support all aspects of proposal success criteria.
- Refine technical approach to project design considering cost, schedule, constructability and life-cycle cost as required by the owner and/or the project team.
- Review final proposal design with project team with particular emphasis on cost to ensure that project goals can be met.
- During detailed design phase (after project award) establish technical, cost and schedule requirements for each element of the design process in support of project schedule and cost.
- Perform ongoing reviews of design quality and status during project execution phase. Promote and support concepts to improve construction process.
- Coordinate activities between designers, subcontractors, suppliers and construction staff to support field activities and solve problems as they occur.
- Provide periodic reports and updates on design status including cost, schedule and technical issues as required.
- Work with design team to develop operations and maintenance manuals as required.
- Support meetings with owners, regulators and project team members as required.
- Perform any additional assignments as required by project director or corporate management.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Educational and experience requirements include: 4 year degree plus 10 years of heavy construction experience or any equivalent combination of training and/or related experience. Experience in design/build engineering or construction management with some background in constructability reviews and/or estimating. Thorough knowledge of the relationship between design, cost, schedule and construction on a complex project. Excellent verbal/written communication, interpersonal and supervisory skills required.
