G*ENERAL DESCRIPTION*
The Deputy Director for Communications the second-in-command under the Communications Director, who oversees all the Texas Attorney General Office’s internal and external communications efforts. Working under the supervision of the Director, the Deputy Director is responsible for press releases, media pitching, media booking, writing opinion and editorial articles, serving as Agency spokesperson, planning and executing press conferences, digital media, written and audio/visual clips, the Agency website, constituent affairs, official graphics, developing issue-based talking points, and coordinating responses to press inquiries. The Deputy Director will assist in managing a diverse team responsible for each of those functional areas. An ideal candidate has several years of communications and management experience in state or federal government, corporate communications, public policy, political campaigns, and/or news media. He or she should be a clear and compelling communicator in both written and spoken word, and must be able to think and act strategically as a key member of top staff.

E*SSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*
Serves as the second-in-command under the Communications Director, who oversees all the Texas Attorney General Office’s internal and external communications efforts.
Responsible for press releases, media pitching, media booking, writing opinion and editorial articles, serving as Agency spokesperson, planning and executing press conferences, digital media, written and audio/visual clips, the Agency website, constituent affairs, official graphics, developing issue-based talking points, and coordinating responses to press inquiries, all under the supervision of the Director
Assists in managing a diverse team responsible for each of the above-mentioned functional areas
Uses clear and compelling communication, in both written and spoken word, and must be able to think and act strategically as a key member of top staff
Works in the office five days a week most weeks
Performs related work assigned
Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity

M*INIMUM QUALIFICATIONS*
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
Experience: At least five years of communications and management experience in state or federal government, corporate communications, public policy, political campaigns, and/or news media
Writing skills in a variety of formats and styles
Effective oral communication, such as speeches, presentations, pitches, and running large meetings
Skill in using the Microsoft Office program suite
Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines
Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making
Ability to clearly convey difficult legal rulings in easy-to-understand language and accessible format
Ability to meet aggressive and last-minute deadlines on parallel tracks
Ability to use appropriate judgment in speaking to a variety of media
Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
Ability to provide excellent customer service
Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)
Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel
Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 35%

P* REFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*
Experience: Several years of communications and management experience in state or federal government, corporate communications, public policy, political campaigns, and/or news media.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations relevant to the communications industry and of the principles and practices of public administration and management.
Familiarity with the government and public policy landscape of Texas in particular.
