Position Summary:*
The Director of Residence Life and Community Standards is a live-on campus position that reports to the Dean of Students and is responsible for overall strategic management of residential life and student conduct. Coordinates and participates in on-call rotation, which includes daily, weekends, vacation breaks, and summers. The person in the position exercises independent judgment, handles a highly diversified mixture of responsibilities in one or several specialized areas, and supports the University's core values by providing individualized attention and access to programs and services to underrepresented students.
The Director of Residence Life and Community Standards is a highly visible member of the Division of Student Affairs and will work with members of the team in decision making, problem solving, strategic planning, policy development, programming initiatives and assessment. Expected to be communicative and collaborative as well as fostering positive intentional interactions with the division partners including students, parents, faculty, administration, staff, and other stakeholders.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:

  • An earned master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Higher Education, Students Affairs, or a related field required
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in Student Affairs or a related field with previous experience in residence life and student conduct
  • 3+ years of experience in supervision of student staff
  • 3+ years of experience in supervision of professional staff
  • Experience with student conduct and Title IX investigation required
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to relate to a diverse group of students, staff, faculty, and administrators. Excellent listening skills and the ability to directly address core and underlying issues with sensitivity and tact

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions (but not limited) to the following:
Residential Life
The Director of Residence Life and Community Standards provides the vision, management, and direction for residence life. Provides leadership to develop and implement programs and operations that enhance the student experience for 700+ students living on campus. Provides leadership and has accountability for meeting occupancy goals and linking residence life with student retention. Establishes accurate occupancy, revenue reports and budget analysis. Oversees the management of all room assignment-related tasks. Recruits, trains, and supervises residence life staff including resident assistants and graduate assistants. Works collaboratively with other departments across campus to improve the student experience and occupancy in the residence halls through programming, safety initiatives, facilities maintenance, dining/meal plan services, and recruitment of incoming and returning students. Oversees, edits, and publishes the Residence Life Handbook. Responsible for defining, guiding, and assessing the educational component of the residential experience, long range planning for the facilities and their occupancy management, and establishing departmental priorities that align with the University's strategic plan and Division of Student Affairs goals.

Student Conduct_*
The Director of Residence Life and Community Standards administers the student conduct process, serves as the primary conduct officer, and resolves complaints that violate the Code of Conduct through administrative and university hearing boards in a manner consistent with the mission and goals of the University, and contribute to and enrich the quality of student life. Meet with all conduct officers to review case load, assign cases for adjudication, and ensure that all cases are resolved appropriately and within an appropriate timeframe on a regular basis. In conjunction with the University Title IX Coordinator, provide support ensuring the University's compliance with federal laws and guidelines relative to student conduct (including Title IX, Clery Act, and Campus Save Act: including VAWA - Violence Against Women's Act). Responsible for recruiting members as well as designing and implementing training to all University Conduct Officers and Judicial Council members in compliance with regulations and other mandates. Actively demonstrate sensitivity to the concerns and developmental needs of all Reinhardt University students while helping students understand violations of University policies/procedures. Compile statistical information and provide interpretations based on data from incident and reports on regular basis to the supervisors to keep them informed about current trends and issues related to student behavior on and off-campus.

The Director of Residence Life and Community Standards supervises staff consisting of Resident Assistants, Senior Resident Assistants, and Graduate Assistants

Additional Responsibilities:*

  • Support the University’s mission, vision, and values and contribute to the advancement of the University's Strategic Plan
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Students to manage budgetary planning issues and manage departmental budget
  • Serve on a wide variety of University and Division committees and task forces to address current issues; including the University's Behavioral Intervention Team, which is a multidisciplinary team that identifies students who may be at risk and helps them achieve success

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:*

  • Experience with management and organization to oversee multiple tasks associated with building systems, managing multiple simultaneous projects, and distributing effort appropriate to achieve timely progress, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of productivity
  • Experience with the use of computer software programs to write reports, prepare materials, analyze financial data, create spreadsheets, and control facility management/workflow
  • Technological knowledge and skills include MS Office, and familiarity with website development, student organization management system, student conduct online system, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements of the Job:*
This position is located within a general office environment. Must be able to sit at a desk and work consistently at a computer for a minimum of 4-6 hours a day. Must be able to walk between buildings on campus and climb stairs. Position requires local travel between the campus and off-campus sites to perform required duties, attend meetings, and to fulfill other responsibilities. Ability to move from one office to another office on campus. Ability to exert up to twenty (20) pounds of force by occasionally transporting boxes, handouts, files, or other materials. Ability to receive detailed information from others through oral communication. Adequate vision, hearing and manual dexterity to interact with people in person, on the phone and in writing. Job takes place in normal environmental conditions. Position requires the ability to work flexible hours including non-standard work hours (nights and weekends).
