The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere (CHPS). The appointment will be made during the spring semester 2023, with a projected start date of August 16, 2023.
Working closely with the Associate Director, the Director supervises the day-to-day operation of the Center, including its budget, staffing, fundraising, programming, and outreach to the College and community. As the Rothman Chair, the Director is tasked with stewardship of the Rothman Endowment in the Humanities, working with colleagues from across the University to provide a vision for moving the Center forward. The Director implements the mission statement of the Center, as stated in its by-laws:
- to facilitate and promote the research programs of humanities scholars at UF;
- to provide an intellectual space and physical location within UF and CLAS for critical and collaborative discussions of the humanities that reach across and beyond individual disciplines;
- to provide a place for outreach to the community in which we live and teach. Building on the work of individual departments, CHPS emphasizes collaboration and critical discussion as its basic program models.
This position is a 9-month appointment, normally extending for three or more years and it includes a part-time summer appointment.
- Tenured faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS)
- A commitment to the mission of the Center and to Humanities research and teaching
- A commitment to strengthening diversity and inclusivity in CLAS
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Excellent listening skills and the inclination to use them
- Ability to think strategically, analytically, and flexibly
- Experience in writing and administering grants
- Ability to work as part of a team
- An understanding of the contemporary graduate student research experience in the humanities
An understanding of the connection between the humanities and public life at UF, in the local community, and in the state of Florida, as well as in national and global contexts
- A successful record of administrative experience with a demonstrable appreciation of and affinity for the Humanities
- Familiarity with national organizations and issues related to the humanities
- Experience with public-facing humanities projects
