Job Description

KIPP Forward @ KIPP

KIPP Forward as a function focuses on: counseling KIPP students through the lenses of critical consciousness, career aspiration, and student agency to complete postsecondary application, financial aid, and enrollment processes; providing families with essential knowledge and perspectives to prepare students to succeed in their chosen postsecondary education option; advising KIPP alumni as they persist in and complete their postsecondary education option and engage in meaningful career preparation to win a strong first job in an upwardly-mobile career field; staying in touch with alumni, keeping them connected to one another and KIPP’s broad network and resources towards career success, fulfilling lives, and social impact.

KIPP Forward @ KIPP Foundation

The national KIPP Forward team at the KIPP Foundation provides critical training, support, and tools to KIPP Forward regional teams across the country to guide their work supporting KIPP students, families, and alumni on their path to college, career, and beyond. The Postsecondary Success team focuses on supporting our advisors working with alumni to enroll and complete postsecondary education and training, as well as forging impactful partnerships with colleges, universities and career programs. As our national alumni base grows from approximately 40,000 alumni in 2020 to 80,000 in 2025, the Postsecondary Success team is also charged with evolving our postsecondary support model to be more equitable, impactful and scalable.

About The Position

The Postsecondary Success team is on a multi-year journey to evolve our networkwide postsecondary support model and a component of that effort is examining how we might use technology to extend the reach and impact of our advisors as their caseload sizes grow year over year. In partnership with three KIPP regions, we have launched a pilot program this year to test “nudge-enabled remote advising” (NERA) – using nudge text messaging as a primary engagement strategy for discreet alumni groups attending college, with a dedicated advisor available to offer 1:1 support and to connect alumni with supplemental national programs, including our National Microgrant Fund and career development programming. To advance our learning during this pilot, KIPP has joined a continuous improvement learning co-op with other national leaders in college access and success, hosted by Shift with funding from the Gates Foundation. The Postsecondary Success team is seeking a consultant with deep expertise in continuous learning, program design and improvement to develop our learning agenda and lead our participation in this co-op.

Responsibilities

  • Refine and Lead our Learning Agenda for NERA
    • Refine and strengthen KIPP’s draft learning agenda and theory of change for NERA. Further build out our learning agenda, as necessary, to ensure we’re able to answer critical questions about whether and how NERA works to support different populations of KIPP alumni.
    • In collaboration with KIPP Forward stakeholders, develop learning and internal evaluation plans, articulating research questions and plan for creating/accessing data systems and tools to monitor impact beginning in school year 2022-23 and extending over an 18-month period
      • Detail when and how we’ll collect and analyze specific data, to what end
    • Note: a KIPP Foundation Analyst will execute the evaluation plan.
  • Lead Continuous Learning and Improvement for NERA
    • Support the NERA team to understand current state and develop hypotheses/change ideas to address key challenges;
    • Develop and execute actionable plans to implement continuous improvement cycles oriented around specific problem statements and associated change hypotheses with a small group of regions, collecting data on the process of implementing the hypothesis and its outcomes
    • Coordinate closely with regional leaders executing tests, building capacity in continuous improvement, and engage KIPP Forward stakeholders in structured debrief of continuous improvement cycles to agree on next steps for action;
    • Engage our NERA Alumni Advisory group for input on improvement project selection, execution and learnings.
    • Note: a KIPP Foundation Analyst will support data collection and analysis for the learning projects
  • Lead Participation in the Hybrid Advising Co-Op
    • As requested, assemble or develop materials required for participation in the Hybrid Advising Co-Op;
    • Participate in all Hybrid Advising Co-Op meetings, including:
      • Three in-person convenings (travel costs covered by the Gates Foundation)
      • Monthly virtual meetings (1 hour per month)
      • Monthly improvement coaching (1 hour per month)
  • Participate in internal NERA meetings (2 hours per month) and monthly regional meetings (1 hour per month).

Skills

  • Expertise and experience leading continuous improvement projects (see a white paper from Shift here to learn more about their approach) and building continuous improvement capacity with practitioners
  • Expertise and experience in program design and developing learning and evaluation plans, with a strong preference for an individual well versed in external research and methodology for evaluating technology-enhanced or enabled college and/or postsecondary advising programming
  • Experience working on a research project with multiple data sources and stakeholders, preferably in education, to produce applied research or program evaluation results for clients
  • Demonstrated experience in selecting and/or designing qualitative data collection instruments (e.g., focus group protocols, surveys)
  • Ability to utilize appropriate techniques (e.g., content analysis, descriptive statistics, correlations, regression analysis) to efficiently analyze both qualitative data as well as quantitative data obtained from longitudinal data systems. This includes experience working in a reproducible manner with common analytical software, such as Stata, R, NVivo, etc.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to translate results of data analysis into easily digestible and insightful findings to inform program design
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including expertise in data visualization
  • Passion for education equity and KIPP’s mission and values (sense of purpose, results, respect, constant learning and humility, and diversity and inclusivity)
  • A proactive cultural leader and team player who thrives on collaboration and learning
  • Cultural competence in collaborating with teammates across lines of difference

Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience with Continuous Improvement & Program Design is expected for this role.
  • Experience in the school sector is desired, but not mandatory
  • Minimum 5 years work experience in a field related to the competencies above
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in the social sciences
