Disney Streaming is looking to hire top talent to support our growth of media distribution and the ownership of our own content distribution and cache hierarchy. Current need is for evolutionary management of a global cache and forward service capable of connecting hundreds of millions of subscribers to content. Specifically, Disney is interested in a leader focused on the development, automation, and safety of our Origin, Midtier, and Edge solutions that are tasked to deliver 100% uptime and satisfy the demand of Disney Direct-To-Consumer needs in support of our streaming platforms globally (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, Star+).
Job Summary:
We are seeking a seasoned leader who has demonstrated an ability to build, sustain, and improve multi-faceted engineering teams with a focus on automation & safety (QA/Test Automation, CI/CD, Deployment Safety, Resilience), and who has demonstrated service delivery velocity growth and continuously predictable deliverables. We expect the candidate to be technically savvy in the CDN (Content Delivery) world, and able to contribute to technical and architectural discussions, complemented by a business acumen allowing the leader to be involved in partner, cost, and capacity planning discussions.
This Director will be responsible for execution of our short- and long-term roadmap of a world class software platform that is designed to store/cache and deliver content between Disney and end-users, while at the same time continuously innovate with technology to align with Disney’s storytelling evolution.
This role reports to the Executive Director, Software Engineering & CDN Operations - Media Distribution.
- Manage 3 key functions within the organization:
- Content Distribution & Origin: build and operate a software layer in support of Origin/Midtier/Edge functions, with a mix of object store, caching software, and APIs
- Distribution Services Engineering: drive architecture and development of a Data Pipeline and Control Plane for our CDN Distribution Mesh (data systems, APIs, UIs)
- Automation & Safety: leverage and enforce best practices in the domains of Test Automation, CI/CD, Security to achieve our operational goals
- Instill across teams a focus on Resilience in a domain where most solutions require the 100% uptime consumers are used to when streaming content
- Manage and coordinate deployments against global capacity plans
- Align with peers and executives across multiple disciplines in pursuit of accomplishing larger LOB goals
- Mentor the team to live by design and operational principles targeted at delivering a World Class product (safe deployment of high quality, resilient, secure, and scalable distributed solutions supporting streaming to millions of subscribers)
- Lead continuous improvement for your teams using agile methodologies and best practices, with a focus on predictability towards milestones and deliverables
- Act as a cross-functional partner to other teams in Media Distribution and beyond, by actively participating in requirements gathering, wide architecture discussions, and software engineering & operational best practices, among others
- Lead innovation efforts and projects aligned with our CTO’s vision and strategy
- Coach your teams on the path of career enhancement and advancement
Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:
Minimum experience:
- 12+ years’ experience in software engineering and development, with most recent experience leading an engineering or operations organization
- Experience with Content Delivery Network (CDN) or hierarchical caching architectures
- Strong knowledge of performance and quality of experience as it pertains to network architecture and content delivery networks
- Experience managing teams on complex high-profile projects, and viewed as the “go-to” individual
- Experience with integration of DevOps and QA best practices and processes, with a track record for excellent uptime and resilience, or improvement thereof
- Experience and track record of improving teams’ velocity and quality of deliverables with PDLC/SDLC adjustments or cultural revamps
- Ability to manage and maintain complex global software deployments at scale
- Confidence when dealing with the full technology stack in domains of Data Systems & Pipelines, Distributed Services, and front-end (API/UI), as well as cloud-based technologies
- Experience leading a distributed workforce across multiple time zones
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Varnish and VCL scripting language
- Experience interoperating/managing operations teams is a plus
The hiring range for this remote position is $266,200.00 to $308,200.00 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
