GEM Technologies, Inc. (GEM) is seeking a Disciplined Operations Mentor (DOM) to join our team. This position is part-time and will serve the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM. This role is anticipated to be approximately 16-32 hours per week depending on managerial support needed.

Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Science or Business Management and 20+ years of relevant experience.
  • Must be tech savvy specifically in MS Office.
  • Must have advanced knowledge and experience in programmatic work requirements, including safety, safeguards and security, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene and safety, radiation protection, waste management, criticality safety, disciplined/conduct of operations, and the integration of these requirements into a functional operational strategy.
  • Extensive experience in an advisory role (e.g., subject matter expert, senior supervisory watch, conduct of operations mentor, etc.), interacting effectively with all levels of external and internal leadership and technical personnel; building trust; gaining consensus; and resolving conflicts.
  • Demonstrated history maintaining effective relationships with both internal and external oversight organizations.
  • Advanced knowledge in technical or operational disciplines programmatic operations.
  • Expert knowledge and experience with aspects of technical project management of programmatic readiness assessment requirements in a nuclear facility including plans of action, readiness review categories, finding evaluation and corrective measures, NNSA collaborative efforts in Federal Readiness Assessment; and managing change control and risk.
  • Extensive experience developing, leading, managing, mentoring diverse project management teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills as evidenced by presenting to stakeholders, etc.
  • Must have been a former manager who understands how to get stuff done, can mentor a new GL, and who is a strong, humble leader.
  • Must understand Conduct of Ops and safety procedures (how they work and what needs to be addressed to proceed).
  • Must have Disciplined Operations experience to work within the system and compliantly.

Overview:

  • Bring additional judgment, experience, and knowledge to mentor LANL managers to implement and/or improve a disciplined approach to conducting technical operations.
  • Provide in-field support for the day-to-day conduct of operations through an inter-active coaching and mentoring process with the manager/management team(s) to which they are assigned.
  • Support the DOM program which entails the designation and deployment of “seasoned” individuals who possess the requisite operational experience, knowledge and aptitude required to effectively mentor (coach) management and staff in the field as they conduct their day-to-day operations.
  • Support the manager in preparing for or oversight of activities such as the startup of a new operation, integrated work document (IWD) development, plan of the day/week meetings, the conduct of a high-hazard task planning and ROC drills, and/or the field oversight of a complex activities where there would be a benefit to having additional observers present focus on learning and improvements in disciplined operations.
  • Provide an interactive mentoring experience with assigned managers/management teams to enhance in-field leadership, employee engagement, decision-making, and operational excellence, which includes compliance.
  • Support scheduled assessments, planning for a specific project, pre-job talks, activity execution, and activity completion and wrap-up.
  • Serve to support the assigned manager’s success in operational and mission outcomes.
  • Serve as coach/mentor for the successful conduct of disciplined operations to assigned managers; effort is NOT meant to be an assessment, but rather a day-to-day shadowing and interface with assigned individuals, and as appropriate, an informal review and reporting to the manager of operational conditions or issues.
  • Provide in-field disciplined operations mentoring and coaching to workers as needed and be available to workers as needed to answer questions and/or offer operational guidance that is in line with the cognizant manager in control.
  • Identify potential management/employee behavioral and project risks.
  • Offer guidance and suggestions in the development of risk mitigation strategies and/or corrective actions, and as appropriate, recommend risk acceptance/avoidance for all aspects of a given project(s).
  • Partner with the deployed Integrator to monitor and ensure appropriate ESHQSS support and service is provided to achieve disciplined operations.
  • Participate, as required, to support the manager in the tactical planning for execution of large and/or complex, high hazard activities and apply technical and/or operational knowledge and experience to achieve the desired objectives.
  • Use tactical planning as an opportunity to mentor the cognizant manager and/or management team.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in Disciplined Operations, SCoR, ISMS, ISSM and work planning and control processes.
  • Advise assigned manager and/or management team on management expectations and compliance with P315 Conduct of Operations Manual, as applicable.

Clearance & Citizenship Requirement:

  • To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.
  • Due to the nature of the work, a U.S. Citizenship is required.
