JOB INFORMATION
The Driver License Examiner III is a permanent, full-time position with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). Positions are
located throughout the state. This is supervisory and public contact work in administering all aspects of the Alabama license
examinations program in an assigned region or serving as the supervisor of a specialized section in the central office.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENT(S)
• Qualified candidates must possess both of the following requirements:
  • Current, permanent status as a Driver License Examiner II (60411) or a Driver License Specialist (60412) with ALEA, and
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Driver License Examiner I (60410) or a Driver License Examiner II (60411) with ALEA or Alabama
Department of Public Safety.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S)
• Applicants must possess a valid Alabama driver license at time of appointment.
  • Applicants must be able to stoop, crouch, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds as required to perform job responsibilities.
  • Applicants must be willing to work in inclement weather conditions.

EXAMINATION
• Promotional to current state employees in the classifications listed above.
  • An Evaluation of Training and Experience as shown on application and questionnaire will comprise 95% of the applicant’s final score for
the promotional register, with the remaining 5% being based on the average of the applicant’s service ratings for the last three years.

Driver License Examiner III Experience Questionnaire

For each Job Responsibility listed below, indicate how frequently you perform the job responsibility, on average, ranging from “Never” to

Job Responsibility

Training and/or monitoring new employees concerning basic driver license duties (e.g.,
answering the phone, assisting customers, answering technical questions, providing other
guidance)

Training and/or monitoring employees on CDL skills tests

Working independently in a full-time examination office (one or two work days/week)

Working alone in a full-time examination office (four or five work days/week)

Working in a two-person office administering exams

Monitoring and/or auditing third party testers

Handling fees collected in a local office (i.e., recording, balancing, and depositing money
received)

Assembling and disassembling a portable/travel All Purpose Workstation (APW)

Working as the “person in charge” (PIC) of an office as assigned (for a specified period of time
when the supervisor is not available)

Instructing classes (e.g., basic exam, CDL, in-service, class at a police academy and any other
training facility or environment)

Assisting foreign nationals with driver license issues (i.e., interacting with individuals with
limited English, directing foreign nationals to the appropriate office, knowing what documents
are required, inspecting required documents, asking questions and consulting ICE)

Handling basic driver license reinstatement issues (i.e., answering questions from customers
regarding obtaining a license and related fees, providing information and points of contact
relative to driver histories and accident records)

Possessing a basic knowledge of all driver license units, such as safety responsibility (SR22
insurance), driver improvement, hearing and fraud (i.e., points of contact, basic function,
proper referrals)

Testing and evaluating new or updated software for Driver License system and providing
feedback

Supervising personnel with ALEA or previous employers (e.g., providing assignments and
instruction, conducting performance evaluations, managing schedules)

Assisting examiners with complex situations regarding issuances and eligibility (e.g., medical,
CDL)
