This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Geotechnical Engineer for our Portland, Oregon; Salt Lake City, Utah; Phoenix, Arizona; or Reno, Nevada office. Your Impact
- Participate in geotechnical field investigations including logging of soil and rock core data, mapping of rock slopes, and sample collection and preparation for laboratory testing
- Perform site and material characterization of soil and rock masses for open pit and underground mines
- Perform engineering analyses and calculations for geotechnical and rock mechanics applications
- Prepare technical reports documenting field and laboratory investigations, and engineering analyses
- Perform domestic and international field assignments, such as geotechnical investigations or construction quality assurance
- Apply rock mechanics principles to surface and underground mine design problems
- Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebook/logs.
- Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geotechnical Geological or Mining Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- Up to 1 years of relevant post education experience
- Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or the ability to complete the exam within 6 months of start date
- Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
- Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel working in remote locations both internationally and domestically may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Master’s Degree in Geotechnical, Geological or Mining Engineering, or an equivalent field of study.
- Experience with numerical modeling software including RocScience (DIPS, SLIDE, RS2) and Itasca products (FLAC 2D/3D, UDEC).
- Experience with general-purpose scripting/programming.
- Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
- A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
