POSITION SUMMARY
The teacher for the parent co-op will work with children who are ages birth to three and their parents in a part-time early childhood classroom. Staff will provide parents with parenting education workshops bi-monthly, and will model developmentally appropriate behaviors and ways of engaging children at each class session. Parents will increase their understanding of child development, and children will be exposed to experiences that foster their optimal development. Teachers may make referrals to other entities as appropriate.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement developmentally appropriate classroom experiences by way of weekly lesson plans which meet the social/emotional, physical and cognitive needs of the children.
- Engage parents in activities with their child that are age appropriate, challenging, and interactive.
- Through classroom activities, communicate with parents about optimal development for their child, and the benefit of open-ended activities that have meaning for young children, and are engaging.
- Offer bimonthly parent workshops on topics that parents help identify which are related to child development
- Prepare classroom for each session so that it is ready to accept parents and children.
- Administer ASQ 3 and ASQ SE to children according to pre-established assessment schedule. Refer any children to early intervention services as necessary.
- Administer Knowledge of Infant Development Inventory to parents at intake and every 6 months to assess the impact of activities and parent workshops.
- Refer families to other departments within CASL as appropriate, or for other social services for which they may be entitled.
- Conduct one home visit during the program year, preferably at the time of the child’s enrollment, (pending COVID guidance indicating that this is safe).
- Encourage the formation of support groups among program participants.
- Complete attendance records, case notes and any other documentation that may serve to facilitate meeting the needs of children and families.
- Suggest other training or support needed for teacher’s professional development.
- Attend staff meetings and other gatherings as appropriate.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience:
- Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or related field such as Social Work.
- Minimum of one year working with young children, aged birth to three.
- Gateways Level 4 Credential at a minimum.
- Experience working with young children and families
- Experience presenting workshops or other interactive materials to parents
- Experience administering the KIDI, ASQ SE and ASQ 3 preferred, but can train
OR
- A CDA (Child Development Associate certificate)
- Minimum three years working with young children and families
- Experience interacting with and presenting information to parents
- Experience administering the KIDI, ASQ 3, ASQ SE, but can train
Skills/Knowledge:
- Chinese/English is required.
- Require basic computer skills, e.g., word processing, Internet, Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to solve problems and manage multiple projects
- Ability to work well with all levels of the organization
- Ability to participate in Reflective Supervision, and to ask for assistance when needed
