SUMMARY:

The Editor, reporting to the Executive Editor, is responsible for acquiring and editing digital original books for the Orbit publishing division. The candidate will focus primarily on digital originals but will also have the opportunity to acquire for other imprints within the Orbit division if desired. The successful candidate will be creative, organized, passionate about science fiction and fantasy, interested in the digital publishing space, have impeccable writing and editing skills, and be a collaborative spirit suited to working closely with a dedicated team based in the New York City office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Read and evaluate un-agented and agented submissions.
  • Commission, acquire, and edit manuscripts for publication.
  • Oversee all aspects of publication, from launching to editing to copywriting and maintaining metadata and fact-sheets.
  • Work effectively with authors and agents in all phases of the publishing process, from acquisition through publication date and beyond.
  • Work effectively with other departments in including publicity, marketing, the art department, and managing editorial.
  • Collaborate with the Audio team on cross promotion of eBook and Audio editions
  • Follow and communicate trends in the digital publishing space and identify opportunities in the marketplace.
  • Utilize data to better understand the market and analyze how our titles, marketing, and metadata could perform better.
  • Focus on commercial results and ensure that titles, covers, and book descriptions appeal strongly to target audience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Excellent conceptual and line-editing abilities.
  • 4+ years’ relevant editorial experience.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for science fiction and fantasy.
  • A passion for literature and an understanding of publishing and the overall market.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with other groups, companies, and organizations on shared long-term projects.
  • An understanding of and an appreciation for the ideas of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in addition to solid computer skills.
  • Ability to deliver timely, accurate work and demonstrate excellent follow up and follow through.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook.

The compensation range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
