California Department of Transportation /Division of Engineering Services (DES) / Structure Construction, North Region, District 1 in Humboldt County is looking to hire an engineering s tudent assistant to perform a wide variety of professional engineering work in either an office or field setting under the direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor) in Structure Construction (SC), Division of Engineering Services (DES). This work is performed on highway construction projects involving bridges, buildings, walls, barriers, drainage structures, sign structures and appurtenances.


Conditions of Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule

F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.


Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).


Minimum Qualifications

Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.


Preferred Qualifications

Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • The incumbent works as a field engineer to ensure contractors build structures in compliance with the contract documents (Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, contract plans and Special Provisions).
  • May act as an Assistant Structure Representative or Assistant Resident Engineer/Resident Engineer on construction projects.
  • Assist in construction inspections to assure materials and workmanship incorporated into each highway construction project and appurtenances are in conformity with the requirements of the approved plans and specifications, including approved changes. Assist in appropriate action when materials and workmanship are non-conforming, which may include ordering removal and replacement of non-conforming work.
  • Assist in calculations related to the proper alignment and placement of bridge elements, establishes surveying control line and grade (elevation control) as required by established SC Practices & Procedures. Assists with calculations related to and the review of shop drawings, informational and action submittals received from the contractor.
  • Assist in identifying the need for and the preparation of contract related documents, e.g., change orders, contract quantities and estimates, claim reports, letters, response to contractor's claims, and requests for information (RFI). Completes daily diaries of contractor's construction activities being performed, inspections performed, tests taken, and materials placed. Develops contract quantity estimate documents at least once monthly and as materials are placed.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
