Job description

Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $14.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application)
This temporary position will be assigned to the Department of Environmental Quality.
The primary purpose of this position is to collect recreational fishing data as part of the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) in the areas of Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender Counties of NC. Data collected provides fishery managers with a comprehensive assessment of the impact recreational anglers have on the state’s coastal marine resources. This position serves as a liaison between the DMF and recreational saltwater anglers, conducting creel census interviews with the goal to identify species of fish caught and released, and documenting the fishing location, fishing time, and other angler demographics. This position also conducts at-sea biological sampling aboard headboats. Coding and editing data according to standard operating procedures, ensuring accuracy with little to no errors, and uploading this data using an electronic tablet are required. Knowledge of fish identification, geographical sampling areas, and water bodies is required. Working flexible work hours, including weekends and some nights, is required. A valid NC driver’s license is required.

- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of the environmental field to which assigned.
- Working knowledge of the state and/or federal rules and regulations pertaining to the area of assignment.
- Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, procedures, and methods necessary to carry out assigned functions.
- Ability to prepare written reports.
- Ability to effectively communicate in written and oral form.
- Ability to handle with tact and consistency the diversity of public contacts demanded by work.
Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
