POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under limited supervision, the Simulation Operations Specialist of the Dorothy Ebersbach Academic Center for Flight Nursing (DEACFN) will contribute and provide effective support of DEACFN simulation activities, procedures, and programs for flight simulation centers. The specialist will work in collaboration with Simulation Operations Manager and faculty who interface with the DEACFN on simulation education, programs, training, and certification. The specialist will provide support on maintaining and operating the high-fidelity human patient simulators and flight simulator as well as support with senior and mid-level management to support the DEACFN’s skills and simulation efforts as well as the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing strategies and initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manage day-to-day Simulation Operations of the DEACFN. Collaborate with work-study students in the simulation center and DEACFN while training faculty, students, and staff in the use of simulation equipment. Work with faculty, teaching assistants and work-study students to implement new simulation scenarios for internal courses and external interprofessional programs based on learning objectives and available resources. Operate patient simulators in support of the curriculum and faculty. Support standardized patients; guide standardized patients through simulation process. Regularly evaluate standardized patients to maintain quality of interprofessional simulation performances. Identify issues and questions of concern. Inform the Director of the DEACFN on solutions to simulation matters. Support the operation, analysis, and troubleshooting of the flight simulator, all high-fidelity human patient simulators, task trainers, and related technical and computerized health care equipment contained within the DEACFN. Set up and take down lab sessions in preparation for various simulations and lab experiences. Operate, maintain, and support faculty regarding use of audio/visual equipment. Responsible for programming of all high-fidelity mannequins and helicopter flight simulator for high stakes testing at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Program software to model simulator's physiological response to faculty specifications. Coordinate the maintenance and repair of all simulation equipment, task trainers, and teaching aides used within the DEACFN. Troubleshoot immediate issues with simulation equipment and all other equipment used in relation to the simulation experiences. Participates in vendor specific training to maintain flight simulator all equipment in excellent working order. (30%)
- Support DEACFN Teams with audio/video recording and editing. Assemble raw footage and transfer or upload to a computer, following a script, screenplay, or outline. Input sound to enhance footage, which may include selecting music and writing voice-overs. Input graphics to enhance footage. Digitally splicing film and video and synchronizing them into one rough cut file. Improve and correct lighting, coloring and faulty footage. Work closely with the faculty to present a final product that matches their vision. Data management and retention of all LearningSpace Flight activities, users, data delegation and creation of LearningSpace content. (20%)
- Provide data to support detailed summaries of simulation information needed in written, verbal, or presentation mode. Attend staff and facility meetings, as well as meetings to support the DEACFN Directors. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administration, faculty, staff, students, and external constituents of the school as they relate to the greater Health Education Campus. Represent the DEACFN in meetings regarding simulation development and operations. Conduct workshops and in-services to support faculty and staff development. Attend university training sessions to keep up to date with policies and procedures. Maintain thorough knowledge of the culture and organization of the School of Nursing and the greater Health Education Campus as well as the School of Nursing’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. - Collaborate with the DEACFN teams to establish center efficiency. Collaborate with the Directors of the DEACFN and other executives in the following areas as they relate to simulation: planning and implementation of simulation educational programs to support all aspects of the simulation program, initiatives and associated interprofessional programming. Contribute to the preparation of routine and non-routine reports of simulator usage, simulation briefings, and internal and external presentations including utilization, equipment, and maintenance reports for both the School of Nursing and the greater health education campus community. Support communications within the DEACFN including email and phone communications for the DEACFN and related simulation areas in collaboration with the health education campus. Support the development and implementation of simulation goals, objectives, policies and procedures, priorities and work standards for each assigned service and simulation area. Work with the director of the DEACFN to track internal utilization, progress and forecast simulation and equipment needs for remaining periods to support the School of Nursing. (20%)
- Support the DEACFN Teams to ensure sustainability and growth. Support the marketing efforts of the DEACFN center to potential students, flight and first responder teams in Cleveland as well as interprofessional teams across the country. Support the implementation plan to ensure compliance and good stewardship over school and university resources as they relate to the DEACFN and associated simulators and task trainers within the School of Nursing and greater Health Education Campus. Support the succession plan for managing the day-to-day operations of the DEACFN and simulation resources and its relationship to the greater Health Education Campus. Support special simulation projects, educational programs, and simulation research as designed by the directors of the DEACFN and the greater Health Education Campus. Support DEACFN Teams with research and development of new task trainers and improved simulation modalities for improved learner outcomes. (10%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform other duties to support the day-to-day operations of the simulation centers as assigned. Act as a back-up simulation technician in CNESI on an emergency basis. (<1%)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
No staff supervisory responsibility. Provide direction and oversight to student employees.
CONTACTS
Department: Contact with the Director of the DEACFN, program directors, dean, associate and assistant deans, directors, faculty and staff to exchange information.
University: Occasional contact with other faculty and staff. Occasional contact with simulation faculty and support staff from greater Health Education Campus as well the other health science schools. Occasional contact with Biomedical Engineering faculty and support staff to exchange information.
External: Contact with clinical partner sites, visiting university faculty and officials, government agencies, consultants, public/private foundations and other outside agencies to exchange information.
Students: Contact with teaching assistants, student employees, and current and prospective students to exchange information.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience/Education: 5 years of related experience and a High School education or 1 year of related experience and a bachelor’s degree required. Experience supporting high fidelity simulation training and education required. Technical experience operating, problem solving, and troubleshooting simulators and task trainers, manikins, and high-fidelity resources within the lab required. Education in business administration, operations, or health related field preferred. Experience at a school of nursing, health related simulation center, or university preferred. Paramedic or EMS training desirable.
Licensing: CHSOS and/or CHSE Certified Health Simulation Educator Certificate desirable or eligible to take certification exam and pass within the first 120 days of employment.

- Excellent knowledge of Unity, including experience with scripting, textures, animation, GUI styles, and user session management.
- Familiarity with level design and planning.
- Experience with game physics and particle systems.
- Experience with mobile and console game development.
- Experience optimizing memory and space usage for support of older hardware.
- Experience with 3D is a plus.
- Prior experience with a well-known mobile title or AAA titles are a significant asset.

- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming.
- Familiarity with current design and architectural patterns.
- Knack for writing clean, readable, and easily maintainable code.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Professional office setting with a heavy workload in a hectic academic and simulation environment. Pressures associated with short lead times, conflicting priorities, and the complex nature of the simulation center and functions of academic centers. Physical conditions involve extensive sitting, giving of tours at a moment’s notice, and use of a computer. Flexibility in schedule required. Must be available for some early mornings, occasional evenings, and weekend work
