POSITION SUMMARY: The position is based in the Preservation Lab located on the University of Cincinnati main campus and at the Main Branch of CHPL. The primary responsibility of this position is to carry out item-level and collection-level preservation projects for library collections. Under the direction of the conservator, this position is responsible for performing paper and leather conservation treatments on circulating and medium-rare collections from both the Public Library and University of Cincinnati Libraries. This position will also be involved with the collections and initiatives, such as the Story Center, of the Main Library working in tandem with Main Library staff and departments. This position may involve direct, onsite customer service.
DUTIES
  • Carry out collections care and preventive conservation projects and maintain records of work performed.
  • After guidance by the lab’s conservator or other authority, work independently on site at Main to coordinate CHPL collections care projects, such as rehousing, environmental monitoring and IPM
  • Prepare items for exhibition, construct cradles and other supports, and prepare mats. Participate in exhibition installation.
  • Perform public outreach, demonstrations and programs in-person and virtually.
  • Contribute content to a variety of CHPL and Preservation Lab social media.
  • Evaluate general and medium rare collections to determine treatment. Execute a variety of treatments including paper and binding repairs, resewing and re-casing of bound volumes, and designing and fabricating enclosures.
  • May assist conservator with basic to intermediate conservation treatment of special collection materials.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, response and salvage
  • Assist in conducting collection assessments and identifying repair priorities.
  • Complete treatment reports and photographic documentation, as necessary.
  • Be involved with community content collected in a variety of formats.
  • Participate in a collaborative process for development of services around diverse individual and community histories of Hamilton County.
  • Assist in the training and supervision of technicians, interns and volunteers.
  • Assist with the day-to-day management, cleanliness and maintenance of the conservation lab, its equipment and its supplies.
  • Assist and participate in staff development activities including workshops and conferences.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the code of ethics of the American Institute of Conservation.
  • Ability to coordinate and execute treatments based on established treatment proposals, within deadlines.
