Job description

Basic Function

Provides subject matter expertise in structural geology and geomechanical modeling and innovation leadership to develop related technologies for the full reservoir life cycle ranging from Exploration through Development and Production. Performs geological research with a multidisciplinary team of researchers to develop industry-leading technologies in subsurface petroleum systems applications with a strong emphasis on quantitative modeling of geological processes.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducts specialized studies and applied research leading to new exploration, reservoir characterization, or field development concepts and technologies with a focus on structural geology, geomechanical analysis, and numerical modeling
  • Develops in-house numerical models from scratch using programming languages suited for scientific computing (C++/Python/MATLAB/Fortran); utilizes existing commercial scientific packages to build model prototypes and develops deployable workflows to solve business-relevant reservoir problems
  • Develops geologic case studies using proprietary subsurface data (well logs, core, seismic) as well as field analogs, literature, and conceptual model
  • Maintains research data and handles data consignment agreements; works with data management/ IT staff as needed to align on data management practices
  • Prepares written reports and makes presentations to management, research groups, subsurface operations teams, external collaborators and government agencies
  • Acts as a technical advisor and provides expert counsel and direction to management and other geoscientists on the effectiveness of methods employed by subsurface asset teams; makes recommendations for improvement where appropriate
  • Provides strategic internal technical service, training, and workshops to asset teams in Saudi Arabia in order to advertise, demonstrate, and deploy new technologies
  • Serves as a liaison between research groups and subsurface teams; effectively communicates and disseminates advanced technical work and explains how the research supports business objectives (production, volume calculations, drilling, exploration risking, etc.)
  • Works with commercial vendors, external institutions, and consortia for outsourced analyses, collaborative research, and acquisition, support, and upgrades of computational and laboratory equipment, as needed
  • Performs other duties and participates in special projects as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Geology or a related earth science. Ph.D. in Geology preferred; specialization in structural geology and geomechanics methods in one or more key areas: trap analysis, petroleum systems analysis, tectonics, rock mechanics experiments, laboratory analog modeling, structural framework building, and/or seismic structural interpretation; thorough knowledge of general techniques for quantitatively solving geological processes of rock deformation, , folding, faulting, natural fracturing, salt movement, hydraulic fracturing, or similar using computational methods (e.g., finite element, finite volume, boundary element) or kinematic (strain-based) approaches; must be highly regarded and accepted as an expert in their principle discipline by their peer group
  • Background in geological carbon and hydrogen storage is a plus
  • Ability to:
    • consistently provide original and unique approaches and solutions to difficult and diversified geological problems to support technical leadership in the industry
    - effectively communicate and disseminate advanced technical work and explain how the research supports business objectives (production, volume calculations, drilling, exploration risking, etc.). - interpret geological, paleontological and geophysical data as aligned with specialization. - create geological and simulation models for the calculation of reserves and reservoir simulation. - prepare professional level technical reports and memoranda
    • demonstrate supplementary skills in the area of statistics and uncertainty analysis is desirable
    • show a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals is strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in business software and in one more of the common reservoir modeling applications used in the oil and gas industry
  • Typically, at least ten years of experience. Demonstrated experience in a breadth of multi-disciplinary subsurface applications that may include: hydrocarbon systems evaluation, source-rock analysis, unconventional reservoir, trap analysis, reservoir quality, , carbon and hydrogen storage, regional exploration, reservoir geomechanics, tectonics and structural evolution, statistical property (geo) modeling, porous media flow in hydrocarbon reservoirs
  • Must be able to comprehend and communicate accurately, clearly, and concisely in English
