Job description
Grand Jury Court Reporter- Contractor:
The District Attorney’s Office seeks one or more experienced court reporters to perform per-diem contractor work. The work involves performing stenographic work associated with confidential Grand Jury Proceedings. Dictation must be taken at high rates of speed and with a high degree of accuracy.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Candidates will take verbatim stenotypic notes of Grand Jury testimony and other legal proceedings associated with the District Attorney’s Office, and will provide verbatim transcripts of such proceedings to the District Attorney’s Office. Expedited return of transcripts will be required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Proficiency in the use of a stenographic machine; knowledge of software and equipment used for computer-aided transcription; ability to take technical dictation in verbatim testimony at a high rate of speed for sustained periods of time and to transcribe accurate and complete transcriptions of stenographic notes; thorough knowledge of English usage, punctuation and spelling; thorough knowledge of hearing procedures and methods of recording verbatim testimony under difficult conditions; general understanding of real-time reporting.
COMPENSATION
Currently $260 per full day session plus transcription fees in accordance with 22 NYCRR Part 108.2.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
(a) Possession of a certificate of completion of a course in court reporting from a postsecondary school followed by four (4) years of experience in general verbatim reporting; or,
(b) Successful completion of the Certified Shorthand Reporting Test administered by the New York State Department of Education followed by one (1) year of experience in general verbatim reporting.
