Duties

The VA in Columbus is recruiting for a Health Technician (Prosthetics Fabricator). The Health Technician will function in the Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service.

The primary duties of the position include:

  • Fits patients with soft good items prescribed by physicians.
  • Measures, fits and makes minor adjustments to off-the-shelf appliances, such as orthopedic shoes or simple braces for cases which require standard techniques.
  • Interprets physician prescriptions, to measures, fit soft goods to clients with a variety of conditions that often require adapting standard techniques.
  • Assists the Orthotist/Prosthetist in the assembly of components for custom orthotic/prosthetic devices.
  • Fabricates, adjusts and repairs all orthotic/prosthetic appliances under the guidance of an Orthotist /Prosthetist.
  • Chooses materials that are appropriate for patient diagnosis.
  • Evaluates the final product as to the specifications of the prescription.
  • Ensures lab supplies are ordered weekly and inventory levels are kept at appropriate levels.
  • Maintains current knowledge of new items, procedures and techniques as related to prosthetics.
  • Verify patient eligibility and entitlement for appliances and services.
  • Utilizes standard medical terminology.
  • Maintains accurate data entry using the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
  • Closes out work orders, maintains appointments and updates notes in the computer system.
  • Follows established techniques and sequences in the development of orthotic/prosthetic appliances.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Physical Requirements: Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Duties require regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, reaching, carrying supplies and similar activities. Duties require incumbent to be able to lift. Occasionally it may be necessary to lift supplies and objects weighing as much as 50 pounds. Requires use of proper body mechanics. Incumbent must be able to work in stressful situations.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/06/2022.

GS-7 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to: Fabricating, adjusting and repairing orthotic/prosthetic appliances; skill in the installation of rivets, fasteners, buckles, grommets, laces and other basic repairs or items required during the fitting process; reading patient charts; using standard medical terminology; taking patient measurements utilizing the appropriate equipment; identification of basic anatomical landmarks and surface anatomy; monitoring inventory levels and ordering lab supplies; accurately closing out work orders; entering data using the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS); and following established techniques and sequences in the development of orthotic/prosthetic appliances.

Education: You may substitute graduate education for the required specialized experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have at least one (1) full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. (Transcripts must be provided.)

Combination of Experience and Education: Applicants may also combine graduate education and specialized experience to qualify at this level. Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements and may be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. (Transcripts must be provided.)

To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned. Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07 level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
