Chesapeake Central Fleet is seeking highly motivated and experienced heavy equipment and Diesel technicians (mechanics) to join our award-winning team. The successful heavy equipment mechanic candidates will perform repairs, routine required maintenance and required inspections to the City’s fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Garbage trucks and other motorized vehicles and equipment.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Inspects, diagnoses and repairs diesel powered trucks and construction equipment. Inspects, diagnoses and repairs CNG fuel systems on garbage trucks.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on heavy trucks and construction equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance such as building up, repairing and changing tires.
  • Performs major repairs such as engine overhaul, transmission repair, and service and repair of hydraulic systems and complex sub-assemblies of heavy trucks and equipment. May perform vehicle modifications such as installing or removing special equipment, or other modifications.
  • Performs Virginia safety inspections.
  • Performs post-accident and annual CNG safety inspections.
  • Performs shop or area maintenance such as general clean up around both the interior and exterior of the shop and property.
  • Prepares documentation such as work order notes, repairs completed, parts used, repair cost, and other information.
  • Provides advice, training and assistance to vehicle or equipment operators as necessary.
  • The selected Automotive Technician (Mechanic) candidate will performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT : For Automotive Technician I, 10th grade in high school is required. Automotive Technician II and III require a high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to the satisfactory completion of one year of college education in automotive mechanics, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of:

Automotive Technician I: One year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Automotive Technician II: Two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Automotive Technician III : Three years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL and ASE Certification within the probationary period. Virginia State Inspector License within probationary period.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Cummins Insite, Ford IDS, Allison and Bendix diagnostic software
  • Experience with Hydraulic Systems
  • Experience with Trash Truck bodies
  • Experience with Compressed Natural Gas and other alternative fuels a plus
  • Master ASE certification a big plus

Depending on qualifications and experience, you may be selected for Automotive Technician I, II, or III. Automotive Technician III is a working supervisor position.

In accordance with City policy, this position is deemed safety-sensitive. As such, applicants for this position are subject to pre-employment drug/alcohol testing after receiving a conditional offer of employment and may also be subject to random testing.
