IBEX IT Business Experts, LLC is looking for a Histopathology Technologist III to provide all histological preparations required discerning the nature and extent of disease in surgical and autopsy specimens from surgery, clinics and autopsy service for the JPC.

The employee will be responsible for the identification, accessioning, proper fixation and processing of all tissue specimens received by the laboratory. The contract employee shall process and prepares special pathologic tissue for study by pathologist, examine specimens and determine methods of preparation and staining to best demonstrate characteristics to be studied.

Location: Joint Pathology Center, Walter Reed Medical Center: Silver Spring, MD

Salary: From $90,000.00 per year

Schedule: Monday to Friday

Qualifications:

  • Histopathology Technologist Level III must have 10+ years extensive knowledge and skill in the applications and methods used in the preservation and fixation of tissue specimens, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining (including complex special stains). (REQUIRED)
  • Knowledge of the procedures used for the decalcification of bone and the various acids and acid/fixative combinations used.
  • Knowledge acquired through experience, education and/or on-the-job training.
  • Knowledge of tissue morphology to identify gross lesions and to identify correct embedding, sectioning and staining reactions.
  • Knowledge of basic teaching techniques to instruct and train other technicians assigned.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all specialized and general laboratory equipment used in the laboratory.
  • Basic knowledge of computer use.
  • Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Be a U.S Citizen

Duties of the Histopathology Technician contractor shall include the following:

  • Develops and executes new procedures related to micro techniques and assists in the establishment of new and competent methods of fixation of pathologic and normal tissue for micro analytic examination.
  • Operates, maintains, troubleshoots and adjusts or repairs cryostats, which are used to prepare frozen section for the rapid diagnosis of cancer. Performs cryotomy and must maintain a skill level sufficient to cut frozen section slides if the pathologist or resident needs assistance. Sets up technical procedures and other detail necessary for processing frozen sections or touch preparations.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the theory of fixation, dehydration, and infiltration of tissue samples.
  • Displays skill and proficiency in performing all aspects of microtomy and slide preparation for routine histology, histochemistry, immunohistology and specimen sectioning and collection for genetic studies. Work requires thorough knowledge and experience in tissue orientation and embedding in paraffin wax and proper microtomy techniques of all tissue types, including bone. Performs decalcification of all types of bone (dense cortical bone, spongy cancellous bone and very small bone marrow biopsies) using various acids and acid/fixative combinations.
  • Performs a full range of duties involved in special processing and staining of all tissue types including skin, bone, nerve, brain and lymph nodes. Performs a wide variety of special stains demonstrating microorganisms, anatomical characteristics, carbohydrates and amyloidal, pigments, minerals and cytoplasmic granules and enzyme histochemistry.
  • Keeps accurate records of work output for collation of periodic reports, equipment maintenance QC logs and other logs/data that must be recorded. Files tissue blocks and slides. Sets up new filing system as needed.
  • Repairs broken and damaged slides.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.

Appearance: All personnel shall be attired in business casual clothing for daily work. Attire worn should always ensure employees safety from working conditions (long pants, appropriate shirts and close toe shoes as required): on occasion, staff may be required to wear a business dress for certain activities.
