    Job Summary

    The Industrial Hygienist is a staff professional responsible for identifying, assessing, and controlling health hazards in the work place, student housing, and the university environment. The Industrial Hygienist uses sophisticated scientific equipment to measure and characterize chemical, physical, and ergonomic hazards, and formulate solutions for remediation or mitigation.

    Responsibilities

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Develop and implement assessment methods to identify and prioritize work place hazards, including chemicals, mold, noise, and other physical hazards (including lasers).
    • Operate specialized scientific instruments, including 4-gas monitors, high and low volume air samplers, personal air samplers, noise meters, moisture meters, lead-based paint monitors, and CO2 monitors to quantify exposure hazards.
    • Obtain environmental samples, including air, soil, and water samples, to demonstrate compliance with environmental regulations. Select and coordinate with external accredited laboratories for analysis.
    • Interpret and characterize direct industrial hygiene measurements and environmental sample results to assess work place and environmental hazards. Maintain records, including electronic files and databases, of measurements and sample results.
    • Develop and implement corrective action plans to mitigate work place hazards and environmental risks through engineering or administrative controls.
    • Provides guidance to research personnel and facilities operations staff on personal protective equipment, including respirator selection and fitting.
    • Conducts routine surveillances of university buildings, including student housing, to ensure a safe environment.
    • Authors scientific reports and communications to affected workers and management regarding work place hazards, exposures, and health risks.
    • Prepares and present industrial hygiene and safety training for faculty, staff, and students.
    • Provides professional development training and mentoring to industrial hygiene and environmental safety technicians.
    • Serves as the institution Laser Safety Officer. Supports and coordinates the Laser Safety Committee. Conduct laser safety inspections and provide recommendations for enhancing laser safety. Maintain the Laser Safety Guide.
    • On-call emergency responder, with responsibility to assess hazards and advise initial responders.
    • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned, within designated time frame.

    Required Qualifications

    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry or related field with a minimum of one year of relevant experience.

    OR

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene or related field and a minimum of four years of relevant experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene or related physical science with three years of applicable experience. Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Laser Safety Officer.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • Applies knowledge and skills to conduct surveys and evaluate health hazards in a large and complex academic environment, including technically complex and diverse work processes, frequent changes in operations, the introduction of new or exotic materials, and difficult engineering and/or economic feasibility considerations in the control of hazards.
    • Applies knowledge and skills sufficient to serve as a subject matter expert for the university in industrial hygiene, providing consultative services to management and technical personnel on a wide variety of occupational health problems.
    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills to convey complex information on conditions, requirements, and courses of corrective action to a broad constituency, including students, staff, faculty, and senior management.
    • Outstanding data management skills, including creation and maintenance of calculational spread sheets, and use of relational databases.
    • Ability to safely drive an AU vehicle.
    • Ability to wear a respirator
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality
    • Detail oriented
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases

    Shift/Salary/Benefits

    Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)

    Pay Grade: 18

    Salary: Minimum $48,341/annually - $63,342/annually

    Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position

    Driver's License Statement

    The Human Resources Division will request a driver's history report for the identified top candidate(s) for this position.
