This position assigned to the Cabarrus Juvenile Detention Center in Concord,
North Carolina .

**Position will be assigned to the 2nd and 3rd shift.***
The primary purpose of this position is to provide direct supervision to direct care staff responsible for the safety and security of pre and post-adjudicated delinquents, status offenders and juveniles bound over to Superior Court as well as provide direct supervision to aforementioned juveniles.
Personnel responsibilities include assisting in the hiring of staff, the training and orientation of new employees, the assignment of work, performance management, and ensuring staff meet and maintain certification requirements and comply with policies and procedures.
Work is subject to close personal and physical contact with juveniles and decisions that are made impact the protection of state property, the physical safety of the juveniles, staff and the employee.
This position does involve shift, weekend, and holiday work.

State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

- Basic knowledge of institutional programming techniques for delinquent juveniles.
- Basic knowledge of various treatment and rehabilitative modalities.
- Skill in establishing rapport with a variety of treatment professionals, staff and juveniles.
- Ability to provide leadership to organize and supervise the activities of a group.
- Ability to effectively communicate and express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to relate with the population served and their families.
Management Preferences:
- Working knowledge of the principles of administration involved in operating a secured facility.
- Working knowledge of the adolescent behavior and development and juvenile law.
- Ability to create monthly Staff schedules.
- Previous Managerial experience in Supervising multiple Staff that includes being a role model for appropriate workplace behavior.
- Experience in Training New Employee's
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in human services field, criminal justice or related human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience working with at-risk youth, one year of which must have been in a secure or residential treatment facility.

Necessary Special Qualifications:
Applicants for positions designated as Juvenile Justice Officers are subject to and must meet the hiring and training standards established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, as defined in Title 12, Chapter 9 of the NC Administrative Code, by the statutory authority of GS 17C.
Selected applicant must attend and successfully complete and pass the Juvenile Justice Officer Basic Training certification program. The certification requires four weeks to complete and is comprised of classroom and physically demanding training. This training is carried out at regional training centers and requires consecutive overnight stays. In addition, the selected candidate must:
- Have or be able to obtain required documentation for certification as a Juvenile Justice Officer (i.e. a diploma)
- Pass a Criminal Background check
- Pass a Drug Screening test
- Pass a Psychological test
- Pass a Sexual Risk Screening test
- Pass a Physical
- Be a US citizen
- Be at least 20 years of age
- Have a valid driver's license
