SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Under direction, performs skilled welding in the cutting, repairing, and constructing of metal fixtures and components. This is highly skilled and specialized work requiring a knowledge of metal qualities and general building construction practices. Employees in this class perform a variety of welding tasks at maintenance and construction sites or in a maintenance shop. Assignments are received in the form of blueprints, sketches, job tickets, or verbal instructions, and incumbents exercise judgment in the metals to be used and general methods of work. Employees in this class may supervise the work of general maintenance workers on special projects. Nature of work requires strict adherence to prescribed safety standards of the trade

CERTIFICATE LICENSE:
Possession of a valid Maryland Class D driver's license or equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of the welding trade; considerable knowledge of the properties of various ferrous and nonferrous metals in relation to welding and brazing, such as their reaction to heat and fusing qualities; considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of appropriate precautionary measures. Ability to work from blueprints, sketches and manuals; ability to lay out welding work and to make simple estimates of material requirements. Skill in the use and care of welding equipment, both acetylene and electric. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
High School or GED diploma required. Completion of recognized apprenticeship training in the trade and varied and responsible experience as a maintenance welder. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
