About The Guidance Center (TGC):

The Guidance Center is a private, nonprofit community agency incorporated in California in 1946. We operate four mental health service delivery sites in southeast LA County, including Long Beach, San Pedro, Compton, and Avalon (Catalina Island). The mission of TGC is to provide comprehensive mental health treatment to our community’s most disadvantaged children and their families struggling with mental illness and abuse, leading them toward a positive and productive future. Summary Statement:

The MAT Assessment Therapist will provide timely, comprehensive and strength-based assessments of infants, children, and adolescents as well as individual therapy and case management/linkage services. The MAT Assessment Therapist works collaboratively with the MAT team, other providers, and the Department of Child and Family Services to ensure safety and appropriate placement and services for youth removed from their caregivers. Needs to be able to work effectively with a range of both clients and staff from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, ages, and in a multidisciplinary setting and be able to work effectively with the children’s system of care agencies.

Works well under pressure and persists in contacting families and providers; meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines and at all times demonstrate ethical and cooperative behavior with staff, clients, visitors and others associated with The Guidance Center.

Regular attendance is an important factor in employee’s job performance in order for The Guidance Center to maintain efficient operations. When employees are absent, schedules and commitments fall behind, and other employees may need to assume added workloads. Employees are expected to report to work as scheduled and on time.

Qualifications:

Master’s or doctoral degree from a nationally recognized accredited school or program offering a degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or equivalent mental health related field; licensed by the appropriate body in the State of California or registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences or Board of Psychology to become eligible for licensure. If not licensed, must qualify for California Department of Mental Health waiver of licensure and become licensed within a specified timeframe. Familiarity with coordinated services, trauma, the children’s system of care, and early childhood development is highly desirable. If licensed in another state, must meet the prevailing requirements for licensure in California and obtain licensure within one year. Must maintain licensure in good standing in order to continue employment.

Computer literate in Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel and Outlook. Depending on position within the agency, may be required to have experience in or possess the ability to learn, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access or related database management software.

Must have vehicle and maintain a valid CA driver’s license and automobile insurance, or other reliable transportationto travel to cities in Long Beach, San Pedro, Compton, or other areas in which the Center has business. Travel may also include travel by charter boat to the Island of Catalina in Avalon.

Duties (but not limited to):

1. Provides a specific amount of direct services with regard to prevailing workload standards including but not limited to providing assessments, clinical interviews of youth and families, consultation with DCFS, school, allied agencies, and other, recommendations for treatment and services, written summary of findings, case management/linkage, discharge planning, and/or individual therapy. Services are provided in-home and in the community. Travel to any service planning area in Los Angeles County may be required.

2. Maintains consistent and frequent contact with staff at the Department of Child and Family Services.

3. Is knowledgeable of child development, particularly early childhood and the DC: 0-5 Diagnostic System

4. Leads and participates in collaborative meetings with stakeholders and clients.

5. Serves as primary therapist/coordinator of mental health services for assigned cases.

6. Maintains and completes all clinical and administrative record keeping associated with the delivery of services including L.A. County Department of Mental Health and Department of Child and Family Services documentation required for clients receiving MAT assessment. Adheres to documentation deadlines of the agency and the Department of Child and Family Services.

7. Understands the mission of the program, the Center, and how their work and position shape the overall mission of the Center.

8. Interacts with the community at large and with specific allied agencies, other programs, and funding sources in a manner that facilitates and enhances the operation of the Center. In doing so, must understand the mission of the program and the Center.

9. Is available for and participates in all appropriate Center on-call rosters and crisis calls/walk-ins.

10. May be asked to provide supervision to pre-licensed or waivered staff, in accordance with rules and regulations of appropriate licensing body.

11. Contributes to the training and professional development of junior staff members in same discipline through professional role modeling, seminars, and other forums as appropriate.

12. Manage, create and/or revise various types of reports from the Welligent electronic records systems and Department Mental Health’s Integrated System (IS), including but not limited to productivity and enrollment reports, usage reports and others that may be beneficial in managing and assessing supervisee’s activities and productivity.

13. May be asked to deliver or pick-up important documents from/to other agencies in the greater Long Beach/downtown Los Angeles areas.

14. Knowledgeable of, or possess the ability to learn and adhere to the prevailing governmental laws and regulations regarding the provision of mental health services, including employee/patient’s rights to confidentiality and limits thereof including compliance with HIPAA, federal and state laws and the reporting of child abuse/neglect, and related regulations. Knowledgeable of and acts in accordance with Ethical and Professional Standards established by appropriate professional organizations, whether or not the individual is a member of any such organization.

15. Is knowledgeable of the prevailing governmental laws and regulations regarding the provision of mental health services, including confidentiality and limits thereof, the reporting of child abuse/neglect, and related regulations and acts in accordance with Ethical and Professional Standards established by appropriate professional organizations, whether or not the individual is a member of any such organization.
