Mechanic

Job Summary

Under limited supervision, the mechanic position performs work of considerable difficulty in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment; performs related work as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Diagnoses, rebuilds, and repairs vehicles and equipment.
• Performs inspections and preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
• Prepares and maintains records and reports.
• Provides routine maintenance inspections and preventative service.
• Makes recommendations regarding replacement or overhaul of equipment and/or vehicles.
• Provides emergency repairs of vehicles.
• Performs skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair of vehicles.
• Reads and interprets equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
• Move vehicles around the yard as needed.
• Respond to service calls as needed.
• Order and pick up parts used to repair vehicles and other equipment.
• Comply with OSHA safety and health rules.

Required Education and Experience

• Three years of experience and/or training in diesel engine and heavy truck repair and maintenance or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Preferred Education and Experience

• Experience with acetylene and electric arc welding.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to the elements, fumes, varying degrees of hot or cold temperatures, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
