Performs mechanical engineering assignments involving the application of a comprehensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments.



Qualifications

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1


Plans and coordinates mechanical and electro-mechanical projects relating to the repair, remodeling and maintenance of buildings, equipment and other related plant facilities involving complex factors.

Oversees the results of extensive mechanical engineering projects, which require the use of advanced techniques and engineering principles.

Acts as liaison between municipal agencies, contractors, consultants and other involved parties.

Plans and coordinates environmental sampling and testing as it relates to plant facilities for compliance with Federal, State and Local Environmental Rules and Regulations.

Gathers and analyzes pertinent information and provides logical, comprehensive solutions.

Conducts field investigations, inspections and tests relative to plant facilities and prepare comprehensive reports and technical papers relating to inspections and projects.

Prepares detailed sketches, drawings, cost estimates, specifications and technical reports by applying engineering and mathematical principles and techniques.

Prepares and maintains accurate records of current and future projects, work schedules and status reports.

Coordinates and estimates manpower needs and schedules and assigns work to trades to meet completion dates.

Prepares and reviews specifications, standards, and construction drawings for capital and maintenance projects, equipment and material purchases and monitors a variety of Authority construction contracts.



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

CHALLENGES

  • Keeping current with local, state and federal building and environmental regulations.
  • Educating and instructing CTA facility maintenance personnel on the operation of existing and obsolete equipment.
  • Identifying and resolving potential non-compliant and dangerous CTA facility mechanical modifications.
  • Investigating new equipment to replace outmoded equipment.
  • Keeping abreast of new developments and techniques in mechanical engineering.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a combination of education and approximately 10 years experience relating to this position.
  • Must have extensive experience in the design and operation of facilities mechanical equipment and its installation.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Often required to work standing, walking, and climbing in addition to usual office environment. Work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES



WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Usual office working conditions.
  • Works various days and hours as assigned, on call 24-hour a day and carry a pager.
  • Travels within the Chicago Metropolitan area when conducting field inspections.
  • Occasionally exposed to usual shop and field conditions such as electrically energized conductors, moving trains and buses, construction noise and dust, machinery, existing weather conditions, etc.

  • Velometer, Bailer, P/H Tester, Infrared Gun, Water Dye Pellets, Smoke Tester, Interface Probe, Auto CAD
