The Institute on Development and Disability within the Department of Pediatrics at OHSU works with patients, families, clinicians, researchers and many other professionals to meet the goal of improving the lives of people with disabilities. We perform research and care to support every patient, from premature babies to older adults, facing changes in life due to the onset of disabling conditions. With more than 100 years of practice, we understand how to best meet the needs of our patients and their families in Oregon and beyond.

Function/Duties of Position:
The Medical Assistant provides a full range of duties and support as part of the medical care team at the Hemophilia Center at OHSU, including MD, RN, NP, PT, SW, patients and families, as well as additional learners and professionals involved in the practice. This position functions within the medical assistant scope of practice as defined by OHSU. Primary duties of this position are; rooming, collecting patient vital signs, point of care testing, documentation in EHR, maintaining clinic flow, stocking exam rooms, assisting with procedures and treatments, strong written and verbal communication with efficiency and diplomacy. Service excellence, kindness, and compassion to all customers, including patients and other OHSU team members is an absolute requirement. Participates in ongoing professional development and competency assessment, and participates in ongoing quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives. Performs requirements for staff members as outlined in OHSU Core Competencies, policies, and procedures.
Required Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent, AND
  • Current BLS certification at hire, AND
  • One of the following three:

1. Completion of a nationally recognized accredited medical assistant training program, including a practicum (externship) of at least 160 hours, OR

2. Successful completion of a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces, OR

3. Current Oregon Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license (basic or advance) and national EMT registration with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT.)

For those completing medical assistant training or formal military medical services training as referenced above in #1 and #1, the following is also required (Those qualifying under the EMT qualification are exempt from this requirement.)
  • MA certification received from a nationally recognized and accredited certifying body, upon hire or by the completion of the probationary period or internal job change evaluation period, as appropriate. Currently, these include:

o The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), awarding the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA.)

o The American Medical Technologists (AMT), awarding the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA.)

o The National Center for Competency Testing, awarding the National Certified MA (NCMA.)

o The National Health Career Association, awarding the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA.)

Once a national MA or EMT registration/certification is obtained, it must be maintained for the duration of employment.
In addition to receiving the appropriate certification noted above, Medical Assistants will be required to successfully demonstrate competencies prior to completion of probation or the internal job change evaluation period, as appropriate.

Note: Employees employed as medical assistants on or prior to April 1, 2013 are not required to obtain or maintain any certification if they remain in the position they held on that date.
Employees transferring or newly hired into medical assistant positions after April 1, 2013, are subject to the certification requirements described above, for both obtaining and maintaining certification while employed.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Computer skills, including HER;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of diverse customers in difficult situations.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Ability to prioritize work demands.
  • Ability to interpret and follow policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Basic applied math skills, including calculations and conversions.
  • Must have demonstrated regular and consistent attendance at work as reported by past employer.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associates Degree.
  • One year of work experience in a medical office setting, including high volume direct patient contact in both front and back office.
  • Previous Epic experience.
  • Bilingual (Candidate must pass a language proficiency examination provided by OHSU prior to utilizing additional language skills in patient care encounters)
  • Formal customer service training, conflict management training, and/or communication training.
