Medical Assistant/Surgery Scheduler - Foot and Ankle
Job description
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Schedules all surgeries and postoperative appointments as appropriate.
- Maintain scheduling packets and patient education materials so that high quality copies are always available.
- Provides, and reviews as needed, patient education for all surgical procedures to ensure the patient is able to verbalize an understanding.
- Answers patient’s questions regarding their care within the physician guidelines via phone or in person.
- Completes and reviews boarding slips and surgical orders sheet and faxes documents to the appropriate facility
- Obtains needed documents, including operative reports, implant records, necessary for surgery.
- Notifies equipment reps of needed equipment/products for implantation or removal.
- Obtains and reviews H&Ps and/or medical clearances. Faxes documents to the appropriate facilities.
- Check all charts for upcoming surgeries to verify that the dictation correlates with the surgery schedules, appropriate equipment was ordered and the rep was notified, the surgery was scheduled at the appropriate surgery center.
- Confirms surgery schedules with the appropriate facilities.
- Releases surgery block time to the Block Book appropriately.
- Schedules outside studies and makes referrals as ordered by the physician. Obtains the appropriate authorizations.
- Telephone Triage – collects appropriate information to determine need, answers questions as documented in the chart or per protocol. Under the direction of the physician, or PA-C responds to the patient need. Documents per protocol.
- Informs patients about the patient portal, enrolls patients in the portal, and uses the portal to communicate with patients.
- Maintains patient privacy under HIPAA guidelines
- Performs other duties or functions as assigned.
REQUIRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
- Active RN license within the State of Michigan
- Orthopaedic experience preferred
Specific skills, knowledge and abilities:
- Demonstrates regular attendance and is prompt when reporting to work or attending scheduled meetings
- Working knowledge of computers and their applications
- Time management and organizational skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes and multiple interruptions
Motor, sensory and physical requirements:
- Frequent bending, stooping, lifting and reaching required
- Standing/Walking: Occasionally
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time
- Demanding Keyboarding/Dexterity assignments
- Must be able to effectively communicate verbally
- Employee must have normal or correctible range of hearing and eyesight
