Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a professional, Medical Laboratory Scientist I position in the specialty of Serology/Immunology at the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories (BPHL) in Jacksonville. The incumbent in this position performs screening and diagnostic procedures on clinical specimens including confirmatory reading (second reading) of tests for the recording and reporting of results.


Incumbent performs accessioning, screening or diagnostic testing of clinical specimens daily, and reports results utilizing the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Incumbent ensures the confidentiality of laboratory records and reports. Incumbent must have the knowledge and technical ability to operate analyzers and amplified molecular procedures for the detection of chlamydia, gonorrhea and Hepatitis C. Incumbent must also be technically competent to perform EIA, latex agglutination, micro-flocculation, fluorescent antibody, solid phase, other serologic and immunohematology procedures for the laboratory confirmation of Syphilis and Hepatitis or any new assays.


Incumbent is responsible for performing all necessary quality control related to tests performed and maintaining accurate and complete records. The incumbent must maintain high quality and quantity of work to confirm with all current protocols, rules and regulations regarding laboratory safety, as well as abiding by all state and federal laws that pertain to the employees, including quality control, quality assurance and competency assessments.


Incumbent is responsible for performing daily temperature checks and maintenance on laboratory equipment including but not limited to analyzers, washers, readers, freezers, and water baths.


Incumbent performs other related duties as required by daily laboratory operations. These duties may include but are not limited to opening and disposal of shipping or specimen boxes, maintaining inventory of in-house general laboratory supplies, maintaining safety and cleanliness of all work areas and surfaces, filing and storage of laboratory records or other tasks as needed.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in testing.

Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in laboratory testing.

Skilled in the use of scientific laboratory equipment.

Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

Ability to communicate effectively.


Qualifications:

Minimum - One to Two years of College Credits towards Natural Sciences. One year of Experience.
