  • Seeks and gathers facts and additional data necessary to establish the medical examiner
jurisdiction.
  • Communicates and coordinates with the medical examiner, the office manager, other medicolegal death investigators, family members, employers, witnesses, and personnel from law enforcement, hospital, medical, civil, mortuary, insurance, organ procurement and other fields.
  • Responds to death scenes or body location under the direction of the chief of investigations and the medical examiner, as appropriate.
  • Inspects and documents by means of notes, diagrams, sketches, and photography the appearance and condition of the locale, body, and other pertinent objects on or near or associated with the body.
  • Coordinates the release and removal of the body with the appropriate responding law enforcement agency, as directed.
  • Conducts an on-scene external examination of the body as appropriate with reference to identification of findings and factors related to time, place, manner, and cause of injury, disease and/or death using routine physical characteristic, documentation and identity.
  • Assists in obtaining antemortem dental information, medical records or DNA samples (including coordination with law enforcement to obtain DNA swabs from family members) necessary for the positive identification of human remains.
  • Obtains pertinent past and present medical, social, family, and other history from persons and sources associated with the decedent, including family, physicians, hospitals, coworkers, employers, and law enforcement agencies.
  • Supervises chain of custody in forensic cases, working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure appropriate release of evidence.
  • Initiates and assists with necessary follow-up investigations and communications with the appropriate law enforcement agencies, legal entities, and families.
  • Acts as official representative of the medical examiner, as appropriate, for records review, discussions, and conferences with other agencies or for depositions or courtroom testimony.
  • Travels to outlying counties to assist with mass fatality events or difficult scenes where the local medical examiner may need guidance.
  • On call after hours as scheduled.
  • Assist with processing of unclaimed decedents by gathering demographic information from family, law enforcement or other agencies to complete appropriate unclaimed paperwork.
  • Submit DNA requests into the State Crime lab system and continue to follow up on status of results.
  • Guide ECU Health Decedent Care with case jurisdiction review by reviewing medical records.
  • Admit and release decedents from the morgue facility
  • Guide primary care physicians on properly signing the death certificates of their patients whose deaths do not fall under medical examiner jurisdiction.
  • Formulate detailed written reports on case calls and scene response.

The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is affiliated with ECU Health Medical Center, which serves as it’s teaching hospital, as well as the flagship hospital for ECU Health.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science and three years of laboratory experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
