Medication Assistance Caseworker (MAC) works under the supervision of the MAP Program Coordinator in conjunction with the Pharmacy Director. Individual assists low-income patients without access to prescription coverage obtain access to affordable medications, principally through indigent care plans of pharmaceutical companies. Will also perform a variety of routine duties of the Pharmacy Technician including, but not limited to, assisting in the preparation of filling and dispensing medications accurately and safely. Under minimal supervision, performs the required duties at a high level of proficiency, demonstrating exemplary work behaviors and ownership for the success of the Pharmacy. The Caseworker will function in strict accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines and within federal and state regulations. Must demonstrate a sincere dedication and loyalty to the mission, vision and core values of BRMC.
Essential Job Duties and Functions:
- Assists low-income patients and clients from BRMC and other area primary care practices with procurement of free or discounted medications available through pharmaceutical companies and mail order pharmacies. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Obtains necessary financial documentation from patients.
- Helps patient complete application forms.
- Follows up with patients, as necessary, to complete or renew applications as appropriate.
- Insures that patients are receiving the right medications.
- Works with health care providers to prescribe, to the extent possible, medications that are on the “formulary” of available discounted drugs.
- Coordinates with Pharmacy Director, MAP Coordinator and other Pharmacy staff to assure smooth transition/processing of MAP medications through the pharmacy and dispensing to patients as appropriate.
- Effectively communicates with the pharmacists, technicians, pharmacy cashiers, and other Center staff members.
- Contacts insurance companies and other provider offices or BRMC providers, as needed, to mediate third party billing and/or payment issues and obtain refill authorizations.
- Operates and uses pharmacy computer software and electronic health record timely and efficiently.
- Refers questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to the pharmacist.
- Completes work activities successfully through effective management of time, tasks and available resources.
- Plays a key role in minimizing the frequency of medication errors. Remains vigilant in the performance of duties.
- Actively participates in pharmacy activities. Including but not limited to: making suggestions to improve pharmacy services and operation, and implementing goals and objectives and policy and procedures of the department and organization.
- Completes necessary continuing education programs as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia to maintain Pharmacy Technician Licensure. Attends Medication Assistance training and education sessions off site as scheduled.
- Capable of, and willing to, perform the job functions of a Pharmacy Technician and Cashier if needed. Cross-trained and readily available to perform the essential duties of the Pharmacy Technician and Pharmacy Cashier positions.
- Performs other pharmacy related duties and housekeeping tasks as requested by Staff Pharmacists and Pharmacy Management.
