Job title: NABat and Endangered Species Survey Technician Temporary Hourly

POSITION

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Colorado State University (CSU) is hiring one seasonal technician to conduct threatened and endangered species surveys on Fort McCoy Military Installation, Wisconsin from approximately May 23 to August 31, 2023. Position may be extended up to nine months depending upon management needs, funding, and availability. Primary duties will be NABat acoustic monitoring by mobile and stationary data collection methods. Additional surveys for State and Federally listed species will take place as part of this position.

CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. LOCATION

Fort McCoy is a United States Military Installation on 60,000 acres between Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin in Monroe County. Located about 30 miles east of La Crosse, Wisconsin, this region contains a mix of rolling hardwood ridges, oak/jack pine savannas, and prairies. This ecological region, known as the Driftless Area, contains numerous rare species of both plants and animals and is truly a unique habitat.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct passive NABat acoustic surveys using Song Meter Mini Bat Ultrasonic Recorders©.
  • Independently conduct mobile nighttime NABat active acoustic surveys using Echo Meter Touch 2©.
  • Conduct surveys for endangered turtle and snake species using radio telemetry devices.
  • Conduct Lepidoptera surveys for rare butterflies and larvae.
  • Utilize ArcGIS software such as Survey123© and Field Maps© to collect data using a tablet.
  • Download, sort and analyze data for rare species surveys.

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS

Applicant must be able to work alone and conduct evening night surveys for bats. Successful candidates must be able to walk over uneven terrain on a regular basis and work in inclement weather.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have or be currently pursuing a degree in a wildlife-related field. Successful candidates must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. Valid driver’s license. Knowledge of central Wisconsin fauna. Aerial photo interpretation skills and the ability to navigate using topographical map/GIS map navigation. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Ability to work well alone and within a crew setting is extremely important.

WORK HOURS

Applicants should expect to work up to 40 hrs/week Monday-Friday. Expect evening mobile monitoring surveys by vehicle. The possibility exists for weekend work.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Experience conducting NABat acoustic monitoring surveys.
  • Familiar with Wildlife acoustic products which include setting and checking Song Meter Mini Bat Ultrasonic Recorders©; and use of Echo Meter Touch 2© and Kaleidoscope© software and analysis.
  • Ability to work alone during night hours and comfortable working in the dark.
  • Threatened and endangered species survey experience to include Lepidoptera ID skills.
  • Data recording and entry experience.
  • Familiarity with using ArcGIS software such as Survey123© and Field Maps© to collect data.
  • Ability to capture and handle wildlife species including turtles and non-venomous snakes.
