ABOUT THE OFFICE:

In July 2022, the Attorney General established the Statewide Affirmative Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Office within the Department of Law and Public Safety. SAFE exercises the powers and duties vested in the Attorney General by P.L. 2002, c.56, including authority to investigate violations and bring civil enforcement action against gun industry members. More broadly, SAFE coordinates across the Department to facilitate the efficient and effective administration of laws pertaining to gun violence. SAFE is directed and supervised by the Attorney General.

DUTIES:

Under the direction of SAFE’s Director and Deputy Director, SAFE’s Counsel will:

Advance SAFE’s work as to members of the firearms industry that injure or endanger others by violating the law in their manufacture, sale, or marketing of firearms.

Design and implement investigations, work with and provide guidance to outside counsel, evaluate state and federal legal issues, assess evidence and potential claims, and prosecute civil enforcement lawsuits;

Do other related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor.

Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey is required.

Four (4) years of experience as a practicing attorney, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.

Preference may be given to candidates who possess experience in civil or criminal investigations, who possess experience in bringing or defending complex litigation, who possess subject matter knowledge regarding the firearms industry or laws applicable thereto, and/or who previously served as a law clerk for a federal trial or appellate court or a state supreme court.
